Another busy week for Auburn sports teams.
Equestrian. #7 Auburn pulled off the big victory over #3 Baylor on Saturday on Senior day in Auburn. The Tigers won every event on their way to a 13-7 victory, including three MOP awards. The Tigers next meet will be this Friday in Las Cruces, NM.
Men's Golf. The men are very close to home in Opelika playing the Tiger Invitational, hosted by Auburn alum Jason Dufner at Grand National. The event began yesterday and will run through Tuesday. The home team leads through round one.
Women's Golf. The ladies finished in a tie for 14th place at Hilton Head Island, S.C. in the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate. We know head coach Kim Evans had fun, though!
Gymnastics. The ladies were defeated by Kentucky on Friday evening 196.575 - 196.325 in Lexington, but still managed to increase their qualifying scores for the post season. Junior Caitlyn Atkinson captured her sixth straight all-around title and the floor, vault, and bars event titles, as well. That wasn't all for the weekend, however.
The Tigers took on Alabama for the second this this season in Birmingham on Sunday in a "non-conference" meet. Auburn scored their highest score against Alabama in team history and Caitlyn Atkinson once again set school records for all-around score and took the all-around title, but it wasn't enough for the Tigers to break the now 112 and 35 year losing streak to the Tide. Auburn fell 197.200 - 197.025. The fact Auburn keeps setting records for their performance against Alabama shows how close this is getting, though. It really is getting down to a few minor slips one way or another changing the overall event outcome.
Soccer. The soccer team opened their spring schedule with a 2-0 victory in Knoxville against Tennessee. Samantha Solaru and Courtney Schell scored the Tigers' two goals. Both were in the second half of the match.
Softball. It was another fantastic weekend for Clint Myers' team, this time out in California. The Tigers may have dropped one game to host Cal State Fullerton, but that was close on the heals of an absolute destruction of highly ranked Arizona, 20-2 by run rule. This was all started by Auburn's last gasp come-back against Long Beach State on Friday when the Tigers were down to their final out and trailing by 4 runs before storming back and winning 8-7 in extra innings. A relatively easy victory over Pacific followed. The weekend was capped off by a 7-4 victory over Clint Myers' former team, the Arizona State Sun Devils.
Swimming and Diving. The Tigers will send 11 to the NCAA Championships. Seven swimmers and four relay alternates will compete in the NCAA finals later this month in Greensboro, N.C. Seven divers are heading to Athens for the NCAA Zone B Diving Championships today through Wednesday.
Men's Tennis.The men fell 4-0 in Nashville to Vanderbilt on Sunday. They will return home to face Alabama on Friday and Mississippi State on Sunday.
Women's Tennis. The ladies swept the visiting Tennessee Vols on Friday afternoon in Auburn. It was their first conference victory of the season. However, they fell 4-1 to #6 UGA on Sunday afternoon. The ladies take on Mississippi State in Starkville on Friday and Ole Miss in Oxford on Sunday.
Track and Field. Three Tigers will compete in the NCAA Indoor Championships this Thursday and Friday.
