flightybroads:

Hey folks! I sometimes see charitable donations and drives being spread around this website, so I thought it was worth a shot at trying to get this one to make the rounds too!

What is Bound for Shamattawa?

Bound for Shamattawa is an initiative organized by a student at my school, Mount Saint Vincent University. Its goal is to help a school in remote northern Manitoba restock its new library after the old library and all the books contained within were lost to mold. The people of Shamattawa want to be able to educate their youth within their community, but they can’t do that without a library!

How can I help?

Great question! There are two ways you can help: by donating used books that would suitable for ages K-12, or by donating money online to an Indiegogo campaign. To donate books, drop them off at any Video Difference location in the Halifax Regional Municipality, or at the Mount Saint Vincent University library. You can also email boundforshamattawa@outlook.com if you need help getting those books where they ought to go. If you’re unable to get books to our locations, whether you live in a faraway province or another country altogether, fear not! You can still donate to the Indiegogo campaign, located here: https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/bound-for-shamattawa-book-drive#home  The money goes towards actually getting the books shipped all the way out north, which is incredibly costly, as well as allowing the people of Shamattawa to purchase the things they deem necessary, such as teaching aids and reading materials specifically for Aboriginal children. Any little bit helps!

I can’t do either of things, is there anything else I can do?

Spread the word!!! Signal boost this as much as you can on social media, whether on tumblr, facebook or twitter. Even if donating isn’t an option for you right now, there may be someone in your circle of friends who is able.

Thank you for helping a community retain its independence and take charge of its own affairs!

Hey guys this cause is kinda near and dear to my heart because Shamattawa is the reserve where my parents used to live and the first teaching job they had. Shamattawa has kind of a rough lot because it’s very isolated and only accessible by winter road, so it can be tough the get necessities up there let alone things like books. Checking this out would really mean a lot to the people up there.
