You know you’re officially a grown up when you start to get excited about ultra light down. No, it’s not particularly glamorous. There is nothing frivolous or fabulous about it. You wouldn’t wear it on a date, or hang it in your wardrobe with pride. But, my gosh, is it practical?!

I finally gave up my resolve and ordered one of Uniqlo’s ultra light down coats in December. I’d resisted for so long because it felt like admitting defeat. As you know, I hate the winter with an intense, unwavering passion, and I worried that by purchasing such practical outerwear I’d be indulging the season and somehow invite colder temperatures (or worse: snow).

Obviously that was a completely irrational way of thinking. So thank heavens I eventually reached the maturity levels where I can wear a down jacket with pride. Yes, I’m still counting down the days until spring arrives – but I’m happy to do so from inside my cosy, waterproof cocoon…

I’M WEARING:
Uniqlo ultra light down coat | Next gloves c/o | J.Crew handbag
J Brand jeans | Tu ankle boots

If also you’re thinking about joining the Down Coat Club, this winter, and need a few styling tips here’s my advice:

First of all, keep a streamlined silhouette by opting for a coat with contoured quilting around the waist (The North Face are great for this) or a belt.

Black is the easiest colour to incorporate into your wardrobe, and it will allow you to repeat-wear for years to come. But navy, bottle green, grey and burgundy are also smart choices.

A detachable, faux-fur hood will instantly make you feel more stylish. And it will also add some much-needed softness around the face if you opt for a dark coloured coat.
