Abstract:
– Pink Passion will take over the Capitol Square on Friday, October 5th, for the annual “Justice for a Cure.”
October is breast cancer awareness month. Five years ago, the Dane County Sheriff’s Office designated the first Friday in October as “Pink Day,” to raise funds to fight breast cancer and to show support for fellow employees past and present, fighting this dreadful disease called cancer. The organizer of this event, retired deputy and cancer survivor, Joan Kamholz, has taken this fight far beyond the walls of the Dane County Sheriff’s Office. Justice For A Cure has grown to include law enforcement, fire departments, EMS, and other government agencies throughout the state. The program is also recognized nationally by the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation.
This event gets bigger and better every year, and 2012 is no exception. The Dane County Sheriff’s Office is unveiling a special Pink surprise at the noon program on the Capitol square. The public is invited to gather at the King Street side of the Capitol where the crowd will be addressed by:

South Milwaukee Police Chief, Ann Wellens
Dane County Executive, Joe Parisi
City of Madison Mayor, Paul Soglin
Susan G. Komen South-Central WI Affiliate, Executive Director, Michelle Heitzinger
The program will conclude with a parade of squad cars, fire trucks and EMS vehicles around the Capitol square.
“Cancer is a disease that has affected all of us on some level. The Dane County Sheriff’s Office wants to recognize October as Breast Cancer Awareness Month, in hopes that more people will take a proactive approach to stopping this potentially deadly disease,” said Sheriff David Mahoney.
Up to seventy-five percent of the funds raised will remain in our community to fund breast health, screening, treatment, and survivorship. The remaining twenty-five percent goes to Susan G. Komen for the Cure grant programs to fund breast cancer research to find a cure.
