Srinagar, Dec 31, Neyaz Elahi,CNS: At least 220 people including 106 militants, 39 Army soldiers, 52 civilians, 17 policemen, 4 BSF and 2 CRPF personnel were killed during the year 2014. Army managed to neutralize some top militant commanders while graph of violence came down heavily as compared to previous years. The month of December witnessed much bloodshed consuming 33 precious lives including 15 militants, 9 Army soldiers, 5 civilians, 3 policemen and a CRPF jawan.

Here are some important happenings of the year 2014:

January 1: New Zealand all-rounder Corey Anderson cracked the fastest century in one-day international cricket history against West Indies in 36 deliveries breaking Shahid Afridi’s fastest ODI Century record. Afridi had taken 37 deliveries to reach the ton against Sri Lanka in 1996.  Lt Gen Dalbir Singh Suhag, today took over as the Vice-Chief of the Army Staff. Jan 2: SFs arrested two Over Ground Workers (OGWs) of HM, identified as Zahoor Ahmad Bhat and Manzur Ahmad Ganai, from Putshahi Kuloosa area of Bandipora District and recovered arms and ammunition from them. A BSF trooper Constable Kanshi Kumar of 80 battalion posted at Badal Post in Sunderbandi belt of Rajouri allegedly committed suicide by shooting himself with his service rifle in Rajouri district. Jan 6: To mark the 21st anniversary of massacre, people observed a complete shutdown in North Kashmir’s Sopore town. More than 50 innocent Kashmiri people were allegedly killed by Boarder Security Forces personnel from 94 Batallion on Jan 6, 1993 while security personnel after the massacre indulged in arson, putting entire town market on fire. Jan 7: An Assistant Sub-Inspector of Special Operation Group of JK Police, Kafeel Ahmed Mir from Keran (43-SPR) was killed and three policemen injured when suspected militants fired on them in Sopore Tehsil of north Kashmir’s Baramulla district. Three SOG personnel injured in the attack were Constables, Irfan Ahmed from Pulwama (124-SPR), Manzoor Ahmed Ganaie from Panzala Rafiabad (822-SPR), Zakir Ahmed Shiekh from Taratpora Handwara (821-SPR). An Army patrol was fired upon in Begpora area of Awantipora in South Kashmir by suspected militants. Army claimed that it killed a Hizb militant in the shootout who was identified as Wasim Yousuf Dar resident of Digripora Pulwama. A constable Ashok Kumar (belt no 813) of JKAP's 8th batallion hailing from Bishna Jammu was found dead in his room at Central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district. Jan 8: Hindu zealots attacked Aam Admi Party office in Kausambi Ghaziabad over Preshant Bhushans Kashmir comments on a referendum in Kashmir. Three top separatist leaders Shabir Shah, Nayeem Khan and Azam Inquilabi have quit Mirwaiz Umar Farooq-led faction of the Hurriyat Conference after the amalgam's leader wrote a letter to its PaK chapter accusing the trio of "indiscipline". Jan 9: Two Army jawans Lempa Konyak and Thoudam Sanaton Singh of 5 ASSAM died after an avalanche hit the army post in Sonapendi Gali of Machil sector in Kupwara. Jan10: Militants opened fire on a joint party of SOG and 27 Rashtriya Rifles (RR) when they were establishing cordon in in Chairhar area, Sopore. However, there was no loss of life and militants managed to flee from the spot. Jany 12: The Crime Branch produced challan against the former chairman of the Board of Professional Entrance Examination (BOPEE) Mushtaq Ahmad Peer and 24 others accused in the infamous Common Entrance Test paper selling scam before the Special Judge (Anti-Corruption). Jan 13:  Three militants including a Jaish-i-Muhammad commander were killed and two Army soldiers injured in a fierce gun-battle in Dooru hamlet of Sopore town in North Kashmir. Police identified the slain militants as Abu Hassan, Muzamil alias Farooq and Rizwan. During the encounter, two soldiers  from 22 RR, S.Kafoor and Ajit Pradhan were also injured. Janu 14: Sopore town observed a complete shutdown against the killing of three militants in an encounter at Dooru village. Jan16:   Election Commission of India (ECI) gave nod to ‘None of the Above’ (NOTA) option during Elections in Jammu and Kahsmir. Faizan Mushtaq of Welkin Higher Secondary School Sopore, bagged the first position securing 98.2 percent marks in 12th class examination. Jan 17: Hurriyat (M) splits after Shabir Shah, Nayeem Khan, Azam Inqilabi and Muhammad Yousuf Naqash formed Hurriyat Conference Jammu and Kashmir. An Army officer, Major D S Bhinder of Meerut accidentally slipped into river Chenab in Akhnoor belt of Jammu district and was washed away by its strong current. Police recovered narcotics worth over Rs 114 crore that were hidden in a truck, which was coming from Pakistan-administered Kashmir (PaK) as part of the cross-LoC trade in Uri sector. The Kashmiri born wife of former UN Diplomat and Congress leader Shashi Tharoor breathed her last. Sunanda Pushkar was born at Bomai hamlet of North Kashmir’s Sopore town. Jan18: Tehreek-e-Hurriyat chairman Syed Ali Shah Geelani transfered his entire immovable property to an autonomous and independent Trust. During a mock drill Government Forces disposed off a live grenade in the premises of State Bank of India housing 179 Battalion of CRPF personnel. Army personnel from 35 RR allegedly fired some gunshot in air to prevent a Maruti car getting escaped from Tengpora Bypass. Jan 20: A Hizb-ul-Mujahideen militant, Javid Salfi was killed in an encounter with Government Forces involving 9 RR  in Qazigund area of South Kashmir’s Kulgam district. Another militant Raja Muzafar was killed in a gunfight  with 3 RR at Dadsara area of Tral in Pulwama district. Jan 21: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah  said the Gaw Kadal massacre of 1990 marks a dark day in the recent history of Kashmir. A complete shutdown was observed in Lal Chowk and its adjoining areas to mark the anniversary of Gaw Kadal massacre. Shut down was also observed in South Kashmir’s Tral town against the killing of a militant.

Jan 23:  Army closes Pathribal ‘fake encounter’ case after claiming that it ‘Couldn’t establish prime-facie case against accused Army soldiers. Jan 24: A professional Swiss skier, Arno Roy (59)  died and two others injured after they were hit by an avalanche at ski-resort of Gulmarg in Baramulla district. Jan 25: Handwara observes shutdown against the cold-blooded massacre of 21 civilians allegedly by the Border Security Forces (BSF) personnel on 25 January 1990. Jan 26: Complete shutdown was observed on the eve of India’s 65th Republic Day all across Kashmir.  Jan 27: A missing constable Abdul Rashid Hakeem son of Ghulam Muhammad resident of Malapora Sheeri Baramula posted as guard commander at Veervan Pandit Colony in Baramulla was found dead.  A complete shutdown was observed in Frontier district Kupwara against the cold-blooded massacre of 27 civilians including three policemen by the soldiers of 31 Indian Medium Regiment on 27 January 1994. Jan 29: A CRPF Head Constable, Baalu Saroday of 73rd battalion shot himself dead from an AK assault rifle at Bemina camp in Srinagar. Jan 30: A Police report revealed that police arrested at least 1300 persons, including 300 students and 95 minors, in 2013 in Kashmir Valley on charges of stone-pelting.  A Territorial Army jawan, Balwant Singh committed suicide by consuming poison in Udhampur district. Jan 31: A Hizb militant Aijaz Ahmed Bhat resident of Charsoo Awantipora was killed in an encounter with Government Forces in Kangan village of Muran Pulawama. Shutdwon amid clashes was observed over the Army’s decision to close Pathribal fake encounter file across Valley. Suspected militants allegedly abducted a person, identified as Mushtaq Ahmad Changa (35) from Sopore town of Baramulla District.

Feb 2: A Divisional Commander of Hizbul Mujhadeen Mubarak Ahmad Wani alias Major Sakib, a resident of Bangidar village, of Anantnag was arrested from Hanji Dantar village of Anantnag in South Kashmir. Feb 3: A 22-year-old student Irshad Nabi Ganaie was stabbed to death by another student in Baramulla. Feb 6: A lady doctor registered a complaint in police station Shaheedgunj against Minister of State for Health Shabir Khan alleging that Minister molested her in his cabin. A sub-inspector of paramilitary Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) Yash Paul Singh of Rajouri  was crushed to death by a speeding truck near Batote on Srinagar-Jammu highway. Feb 7: Congress leader and MoS Health Shabir Khan resigns after the allegations leveled against him by the better-half of a separatist leader alleging him of sexual assault. Feb8: Omar Abdullah led Cabinet extended 73rd amendment of the Constitution of India to the State of Jammu and Kashmir. Feb 9: Undeclared curfew, protests and clashes marked the first death anniversary of Muhammad Afzal Guru, who was secretly hanged in Delhi’s Tihar Jai in 2013. Feb 10: Amid restrictions and undeclared curfew, Kashmir observed shutdown in remembrance of Muhammad Afzal Guroo and Muhammad Maqbool Bhat for second consecutive day. Feb 11:  Amid restrictions and undeclared curfew, Kashmir observed shutdown in remembrance of Muhammad Afzal Guroo and Muhammad Maqbool Bhat for third consecutive day. Feb13:  Finance Minister Abdur Rahim Rather presented the Rs 43,543-crore budget of the National Conference-Congress coalition government in the Legislative Assembly. The highly acclaimed Kashmiri cricketer Parvez Rasool was sold out at Rs 95 lakhs in the Indian Premier League auction to Sunrisers Hyderabad. Two Hizbul Mujahideen militants, Arshad Hussain Sheikh of Imam Sahib Shopian and Abid Ahmad of Vehil Shopian were killed in a gunfight at Gugloora Mohalla of Pinjura village of Shopian town in South Kashmir. Complete shutdown was observed in north Kashmir’s Bandipora township to protest the arrest of local youth. Feb14: Shutdown observed in Shopian against the killing of two militants while in Bandipora against the arrests of youth.Principal Sessions Court sentenced Riyaz Ahmad Nath of Chanpora Srinagar to rigorous imprisonment of 10 years for throwing acid on a woman in 2013. Feb 15: Four youth according to CNS were injured in Shopian as police use deadly weapon on protesters after the killing of two Hizb local militants; 2 lost vision. Feb 16: At least 14 persons were killed and 33 others injured when a mini-bus they were travelling in fell into a deep gorge near Banihal Ramban. Kashmir’s ace footballer Mehrajuddin Wadoo awarded ‘Indian player of the event’ after Mohammdan Sporting club won IFA shield after 43 years. Hizb ‘IED expert’ Muhammad Shafi Sheik alias Shafi Peer alias Rashid of Zaloora area of Sopore was killed in a gunfight near Seelo Sopore with Indian Army. Feb 17: Board of Professional Entrance Examinations (BOPEE) cancelled admission of 12 candidates who were pursuing MBBS at Government Medical College here after managing selection allegedly by fraudulent means in CET 2012. Feb18: A year after Afzal hanging, Supreme Court of India Commuted death sentence of 3 convicts involved in the killing of Rajiv Gandhi to life imprisonment. Mainstream and Separatist leaders including the wife of Muhammad Afzal Guru described it India’s collective shame. Feb 19: A Hizb militant Tauseef Ahmad Dar son of Ghulam Hassan of Prithu Pulwama was killed in Army firing in Central Kashmir’s Dalwan area of Budgam district. At least half a dozen persons were injured in protests and clashes that erupted against the killing. Febr 20: Amid shutdown and curfew, at least 36 people were injured when clashes erupted in south Kashmir’s Pulwama town against the killing of a local militant. North Kashmir’s Sopore town observed a complete shutdown to demand whereabouts of a local vegetable seller, Mushtaq Ahmad Changa, who was kidnapped by unidentified persons from his home at Arampora during the intervening night of 29-30 January.

The screening of ‘Ocean of Tears,’ a documentary on Kunan Poshpora rape victims, was disrupted by Hindu zealots in Kerala. Feb 21: Unidentified gunmen shot dead a 25-year-old PG Islamiyat student Wasim Mehraj Malla from Bagh-e-Islam Kraakshun Colony in north Kashmir’s Sopore town. Feb 22: The State Government ruled out constitution of a Commission of Inquiry to probe the civilian killings which took place during 2010.  A Pakistani prisoner, Showkat Ali, hailing from Sialkot allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself in District Jail at Ambphalla in Jammu. Feb 23: Government revealed in Legislative Assembly that Army and paramilitary forces are illegally occupying 66,690 kanals of land in Jammu and Kashmir. Curfew was lifted from South Kashmir’s Pulwama town after three days. Clashed had erupted there after the killing of Hizb militant in a gun fight. Feb 24:  Army claimed that it killed 7 militants in Dardpora Lolab forest of frontier district Kupwara. Feb 25: Around 12 persons including some photojournalists were injured when police resorted to aerial firing and burst tear smoke shells in Lalpora area of Lolab in Kupwara district after protests and clashes broke out against  killing of seven persons, whom the Army identified as militants. Administration later imposed curfew in the area to contain the protests. In a shocking disclosure about the rampant use of controversial Public Safety Act (PSA) in Jammu and Kashmir, the government has disclosed that 16,329 cases of PSA have been slapped on people in the State since the outbreak of conflict in 1988. Feb26: Amid curfew and clashes complete shutdown was observed in Kupwara against the killing of seven ‘militants’ by Army. Feb 27:  An Army soldier Ranvir Singh from 13 Rashtriya Rifles shot dead his five colleagues before shooting himself at a camp in Safapora Manasbal in Kashmir’s Ganderbal district. The slain soldiers have been identified as Amit Kumar of 12 Kumaon, Lance Naik Tabruq Ansari of 278 Field Regiment, Sepoy Surinder Singh of 2 Kumaon, Rifleman M R Ajinath of 36 Medical Regiment and Rifleman Rajput Joni of 278 Field Regiment. A Border Security Force officer of 69 Battalion R.N.Pratapo died of cardiac arrest in Machil sector of North Kashmir’s Kupwara district. Feb 28: A Junior Commissioned Officer (JCO) Surinder Singh of 2 Rashtriya Rifles posted at Soibugh army camp shot himself dead with his service rifle. Complete shutdown was observed against Lolab Killings all across Kashmir.

March 1:  Police said six of the seven men killed by Army in Lolab Kupwara on February 24 were Pakistani militants. "The identity of 6 killed militants were revealed as Sufian, Rehman, Qari, Kashif, Dawood and Arqam. The identity of seventh militant has not been established yet but he is also a foreigner. The anniversary of Zakura crossing massacre was observed with a large number of people including relatives of victims and political activists visited the Martyrs’ graveyard. On March 1, 1990, the armed forces opened fire on unarmed and peaceful demonstrators at Zakura crossing, killing 26 and injuring scores of others. March 3:  Two policemen Farooq Ahmad Mir son of Ghulam Hassan Mir of Vedpora, Pulwama and Mukhtar Ahmad Wani son of Ghulam Hassan Mir of Saidawari, Qazigund were killed after suspected militants attacked a police vehicle outside District Court Complex in South Kashmir’s Pulwama town. An SOG man Bupinder Singh was critically injured after he was stabbed by a youth with sharp edged weapon near Drangbal Pampore. March 4:  Jammu and Kashmir High Court ruled that courts cannot interpret the Quranic verses or precepts of the Prophet Muhammad (SAW) to lay down rules of Shariah and said that such matters fall within the domain of Islamic scholars. March 5: Complete shutdown was observed in North Kashmir’s Baramulla district on the first death anniversary of Tahir Sofi who was killed in Army firing. March 6: Around 67 Kashmiri college students studying in Meerut were charged with sedition by the Uttar Pradesh police for cheering Pakistan's victory against India during a cricket match on March 2. After the intervention of NC and PDP leadership, UP Govt dropped the charges. March 8: An 80 year old man Ghulam Muhammad Dar was shot dead by unidentified persons in his native village of Dogripora in Awantipora Town.  Suspected militants opened fire on a cavalcade of the Commanding Officer of Army’s 32 Rashtriya Rifles (RR), Colonel Amit in Kushpora area of Baramulla district in north Kashmir. However, no one was injured in the attack. March 9: A soldier from 24 RR Sunil Bharat Kumar stationed at Wasun Ganderbal camp shot himself dead with his service rifle. March 10: Two militants Abu Hurraira and Abu Tullah were killed and an Army Major Sandeep Kotwal of 6 RR was injured in an encounter at Vilgam in Handwara area of north Kashmir’s Kupwara district.

CRPF claimed that it killed a Lashkar militant Arshid Bhai alias Chhotu in South Kashmir’s Tral town. March 12: Seventeen persons died in different accidents across Jammu and Kashmir due to heavy snowfall while property worth crores was damaged. Two Army personnel Naik Vijay Prasad and Dharmindra Singh of 82 field regiment lost their lives after an avalanche hit their camp in Kargil sector of Ladakh region. Am army jawan, Sunil Chowdhary, son of Banvar Lal, resident of Jodhpu slipped to death from a train in Samba district of Jammu and Kashmir. March 13:  A doctor from Kashmir Dr Irfan Ali, hailing from Nishat-Shalimar area of Srinagar was killed in conflict-ridden Libya after being abducted by unidentified gunmen last Sunday. March 14: A youth Farhat Ahmed Dar son of Ghulam Muhammad of Shahgund was killed in police firing at Naidkhai Sumbal shortly after Friday protests. March 15: The State Government imposed undeclared curfew and restrictions in Bandipora district and downtown Srinagar to scuttle protests against the killing of a youth in police firing in Naidkhai, Sonawari, area of north Kashmir. Amid clashes, people in North Kashmir  and Srinagar observed complete shutdown. CNS released its eighth edition of 2014-15 telephone directory. March 16: Amid curfew and restrictions, a complete shutdown was observed in Kashmir against the killing of a youth in police firing in Naidkhai area of north Kashmir on Friday evening. March 17: Curfew continued in Bandipora while 12 people were hurt during clashes which broke out against the killing of Farhat Ahmed Dar, a youth from Shahgund Naidkhai who was killed in police firing few days ago. March 18: Scores of people were injured in Hajin during clashes with police. The people were protesting against the killing of Shahgund youth Farhat Dar in police firing. March 20: Noted author and journalist Khushwant Singh died at the age of 99. March 21: One person Abdul Hameed Malik of Naman Kakapora was injured when an explosive device went off when he was fiddling with it. March 22:  CB probe indicts top officials in drug scam. Former Director Health Jammu, Dr Madhu Khullar and others approved purchases from dubious company on fake documents. March 23: Official data has revealed that as many as 127 civilians with pellet injuries have been admitted to Shri Maharaja Hari Singh (SMHS) hospital here in three years. March 24:  Militants fire on Army patrol In Dadsara area of North Kashmir’s Tral town. However, no one was injured during the shootout. March 25:  Enforcement Directorate ordered attachment of two residential flats, plot, Bank Accounts of Common Entrance Test (CET) scam kingpin and former chairman of Board of Professional Entrance Examinations (BOPEE), Mushtaq Ahmad Peer. March 26:  Tral observed shutdown against Army harassment. March 27:   Amnesty in its annual report said that out of 778 executions worldwide, Afzal Guroo was India’s only execution in 2013. March 28:   Suspected militants carried out twin attacks on the Jammu-Pathankote highway morning, killing a soldier and two civilians while causing injuries to six others. All the three militants were also killed after the day-long encounter. The deceased Army jawan was identified as Lance Naik V.Anthony, while the two civilians killed in the attack were Jitram and Driver Tarseem Singh. The slain militants were not identified. March 29:   Militants attacked a police party at Kakapora Pulwama in south Kashmir injuring a Police constable Javid Iqbal. Suspected militant attacked Army patrolling party near New Colony Palhalan in North Kashmir’s Baramulla distric.

Police defused an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) after a patrolling party of 151 Territorial Army at Bemina Srinagar noticed it.

April 1:  A CRPF trooper Constable Rakesh Kumar of Bihar, attached with 79th battalion allegedly committed suicide by shooting himself with his service rifle inside a camp in the high security Sonawar area of Srinagar.

April 3: A Territorial Army jawan Muneer Ahmad Manhas son of Nazir Ahmad Manhas resident of Kamalkote Uri involved in fake currency racket committed suicide inside police station Ram Munshi Bagh.

Pakistan's former military dictator Pervez Musharraf, narrowly escaped an assassination attempt when a powerful bomb went off near his farmhouse minutes after his convoy had passed between Faizabad and Rawal Dam Chowk  in Islamabad. April 4:  Army and police arrested 3 youth from Dharmona Soibugh area of Budgam district while two missing youth from Kakapora according to police have joined militant ranks. April 5:   A court sentenced a former government gunman Ghulam Nabi Moughal son of Ali Akbar Moughal resident of Manigah Kupwara   to life imprisonment for killing a policeman in 2004. April 6: An unidentified gunman shot at and injured former Chief Medical Officer (CMO) Pulwama, Dr Ghulam Qadir, at his private clinic in Pulwama. An army soldier Sepoy Manoj Kumar Arjun allegedly committed suicide by shooting himself with his service rifle inside the Mahar camp at Z-Gali Machil in north Kashmir’s Kupwara district.

A Border Security Force (BSF) trooper Kustur Singh from Rajasthan committed suicide by shooting himself with his service rifle in Poonch district. April 7:  Major Rahul Singh of Rashtriya Rifles slips to death in Panchalthal area of south Kashmir’s district during a cordon and search operation. April 8:  Kupwara (Zonareshi) encounter claimed five lives including two Laskar militants Willayat Khan and Abu Khasa, Junior Commissioned Officer (JCO) of Army, Naib Subedar Kakanvari, Head Constable Muhammad Shafi and SOG man Reyaz Ahmed. During the encounter 6 security personnel and a woman were wounded. Suspected militants shot at a police man Shabir Ahmed and decamped with his rifle in South Kashmir Islamabad town. The cop was wounded in the attack.

April 13:  Two policemen and two militants were killed in an attack on the house of ruling National Conference youth leader Yawar Masoodi in Bapora area of Khrew of Pulwama district in south Kashmir. Slain policemen were identified as Head Constable Abdul Hamid and Constable Vinod Kumar while police identified the slain militants as Abu Jaar and Usman Gauri of Lashkar-e-Toiba from Abotabad, Pakistan. April 14: Two LeT militants Abu Huzaifa and Chota Hafiz were killed in Ahmed Nagar Soura encounter. Two policemen Tazeem Ahmed and Qazi Masood were also injured during the shootout. April 15: A police constable Javid Ahmed of Kudji Mangit Banihal committed suicide after shooting self at his residence. April 17:  Unidentified gunmen shot dead a PDP Sarpanch Muhammad Amin Pandith at his residence Gulzarpora Awantipora.

April 20:  Dr Farooq Abdullah alleged that former Home Secretary R.K.Singh was responsible for the secret hanging of Afzal Guroo and he will file charge sheet against him. April 21: Unidentified gunmen struck in Tral area of the Pulwama district and killed a Sarpanch Ghulam Nabi Mir, his son Firdous Ahmed at Batigund Tral while gunmen shot at Numberdar of Amlar village Muhammad Anwar Sheikh outside his residence. April 22: Day after unidentified gunmen shot dead a Congress Sarpanch and his son in Tral area of South Kashmir’s Pulwama district, a number of Panchayat representatives from Kashmir tendered their resignation en-masse. April 23:  Shopian and Tral observed shutdown against arrest spree.

April 24: Amid protests and clashes South Kashmir prefers boycott to ballot, 72% voters stay away from polls, 28% vote in fringes.  A Polling official Zai-ul-Haq resident of Hurpora Shopian was killed and five others including two CRPF personnel were injured in when unidentified gunmen attacking a vehicle carrying polling staff near Hendu, Nagbal area of South Kashmir’s Shopian district. April 25: Three militants, Asif Wani aka Muzamil son of Abdul Razak resident of Drubgam Pulwama, Shabir Ahmed Gorsi resident of Ringward Keller and Abdul Haq aka HaMeem resident of Arwani Islamabad and two Army men including Major Mukund Vardarajan and soldier Vikram Singh of army’s 44 Rashtriya Rifles were killed in an encounter at Karewa, Manlo village of South Kashmir’s Shopian district.

April 26: Amid shutdown and clashes in South Kashmir’s Shopian district three slain militants were laid to rest. April 27: At least 17 persons were injured in two blasts at separate venues of election rallies of the ruling National Conference at Khanyar and Magam. April 28: More than 500 youth arrested by police on charges of stone-pelting. April 29:  Four passengers including former Hizbul Mujahideen spokesman, Abdul Khaliq Dar alias Junaid-ul-Islam were injured after unknown gunman evening opened fire on a passenger bus near Sangrama. April 30:  A youth Bashir Ahmed Bhat of Gratabal Nawakadal was killed while four others, including a woman, injured after paramilitary Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) opened fire on a group of youth in Nawakadal area of old Srinagar.

Amid complete shutdown polling for Central Kashmir Parliamentary Constituency held with 74 percent people boycotted the polls.

May 1:  Amid curfew and clashes complete shutdown was observed in Kashmir Valley against the killing of a youth Bashir Ahmed at Nawakadal in CRPF firing. May 2: Clashes, protests continued against the killing of Nawakadal youth. Old City reeled under curfew for the consecutive second day. A police constable Abdul Rashid resident of Kokarnag lost his life after his service rifle went off accidentally in South Kashmir’s Anantnag town.

May 3: Army foiled an infiltration bid along the Line of Control (LoC) in Poonch district of Jammu and Kashmir. May 4: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has asked the J&K government to maintain videographic records of medical procedures conducted in cases of deaths in custody and encounters. May 6: Three persons including two CRPF personnel were injured in a grenade attack in Sopore. May 7:  Amid poll boycott in selected belts of North Kashmir, clashes, shutdown, and violence marked the polling day for Baramulla parliamentary seat. Amid a couple of explosions, stone-pelting incidents, massive anti-election protests rocked scores of North Kashmir areas as protesters attacked polling booths,  government forces and even made polling staff hostage at a number of places. There was 39.6 percent polling. May 8: Police said that during a shootout at Amirabad Tral, one militant before fleeing from the spot was seriously injured. The body of the militant Syed Bhai was retrieved from an orchard. National Conference Sarpanch from Wanpoh Anantnag Gul Muhammad was shot dead by unidentified persons. May 9:  Shutdown was observed in Bandipora, Baramulla and Sopore against the detention of scores of youth. May 10:  Two militants were killed while an Army soldier suffered injuries during a gunfight along the Line of Control in Poonch Sector. May 14: Baramulla youth Zahoor Ahmed Malla booked under PSA for his alleged involvement in stone-pelting. May 16:  BJP wins a thumping majority across country, PDP routed NC in all the three Lok Sabha seats in Kashmir, Congress routed in Jammu, Farooq Abdullah and Ghulam Nabi Azad amoung the losers. PDP president Mehbooba Mufti defeated Mehboob Beigh, Tariq Hamid Karra defeated Farooq Abdullah, Muzaffar Hussain Beigh crushed Sharief-u-Din Shariq while Azad lost to BJP’s Dr Jitendra Singh. Besides, Udhampur, Jammu and Ladakh seats were also bagged by BJP. May 17: At least three militants escaped from the cordon of security forces at Tral in South Kashmir district of Pulwama. May 18: Unidentified gunmen according to CNS shot dead an undergraduate student Abid Akbar Wani (20) of Krankshivan colony  in north Kashmir’s Sopore town. An army man Sepoy Bhikale Uttam Balu was killed and two others injured after suspected infiltrators fired upon them in Akhnoor secotor of Jammu Division. May 19: A minor girl Simran Reyaz was killed while her brother Fayaz Parrey, also a minor, received critical injuries after an unexploded shell went off in a village near Tosamaidan firing range in district Budgam. An Army soldier Mushtaq Mir was killed and three others injured in an encounter at Chadoora in district Budgam of central Kashmir. Militants managed to flee from the encounter site. May 20:  The State Government lifted the ban on Short Messaging Service (SMS) on pre-paid SIM cards. Unknown gunmen killed 28 years old shopkeeper Naseer Yousuf Mir resident of Guglora Pinjora  area of Shopian district.

May 23: At least six policemen were Friday injured after a verbal brawl between police and personnel of Army’s High Altitude Warfare School (HAWS) at the tourist resort of Sonamarg turned ugly. May 25:  Two militants were killed in an encounter with forces in Nowpora village of Frisal area in Kulgam. Police identified the slain LeT militants as Ishfaq Ahmad Bhat (19) alias Muzamil son Ghulam Muhammad of Chakoora village of Shopian district and Zubair Ahmad Bhat (20) alias Musaib son of Nazir Ahmad, native of Nowpora village of Frisal. In an incident of fratricide, an Army soldier from J&K Light Infantry Naik Darshan Singh shot dead his two seniors Havaldar Ranjot and SubedarChamel before ending his life on a forward post along the Line of Control in Poonch sector. May 26: BJP leader Narendra Damodhar Das Modi sworn in as India’s 15th Prime Minister. May 27: An Indian Air Force Squadron Leader and the pilot Raghu Bansi died on spot after the MiG-21 fighter aircraft, which he was flying, crashed near Chakdar Madhama area of Sangam Bijbehara in South Kashmir’s Anantnag district. May 28: J&K’s star cricketer, Parvez Rasool was included in the national squad for Bangladesh tour. May 29: An army jawan Satish Chandar Thakur committed suicide by shooting self in Rajouri. May 31:  The US State Department has noted in its report that detainees lodged under controversial Public Safety Act (PSA) in Jammu and Kashmir are denied access to lawyers and medical attention by law enforcing agencies.

June 21: NIA in its investigation has revealed that DPSC tried to frame Liyaqat Shah in a false case. June 22: Shabir Ahmad Naikoo, a dentist by profession who was injured in firing incident at Seeloo area of Sopore two days ago succumbed to his injuries at SKIMS Soura.

June 23: LeT militant Mehmood Bhai alias Hurraireh was killed in an encounter at Kranshivan Sopore while another militant managed to escape.

Post encounter protest claimed the life of a youth Arshad Shah resident of Naseem Bagh Sopore after government forces fired upon protestors. Four other youth received bullet injuries. Complete shutdown was observed in wake of Quit Kashmir Movement call given by Muhammad Yasin Malik.

June 24: Kashmir observed shutdown against the killing of a youth by government forces in Sopore area of north Kashmir. June 25: Picnic bus turned turtle near Sangam Bijbehara killing 3 people from Shous Kulgam.  Curfew continued in Sopore for the third consecutive day.

After the death of militant agitated protestors torched two armoured police vehicles. Police identified the slain militant as Adil Pathan. July 9: A militant Abu Mosa was killed in an encounter in at Hamla Patti in Rajwar area of Handwara. July 13: Kashmir shuts amid restrictions to commemorate the anniversary of 1931 martyrs. July 15:  unidentified gunmen shot at Bank security guard in Pulwama. He was injured in the attack. Massive anti-Israel protest continues in Kashmir.July 16:  In a tragic road accident, seven persons including a pregnant lady was killed on Wednesday due to head on collision between an Army recovery Van and a Tavera passenger vehicle near Shah Villayat Colony Omar Abad area of Zainakot Srinagar. Unidentified gunmen shot dead an Ikhwani turned army man Gowhar Matoo resident of Gajwani Kulgam in Khudwani area of Kulgam town.  A BSF jawan was killed after brief exchange of fire between India and Pakistan in RS Pora sector of Jammu. July 17: Valley shuts against Israel aggression and also to mourn the death of 7 persons killed due to collision between civil and army vehicle.July 18: Scores injured and property worth crores damaged during clashes between locals and non-locals at Amarnath Base Camp Baltal.

July 19: A minor Suhail Ahmed Lone was killed in CRPF firing at Khudwani Kulgam during anti-Israel protest. July 20:  Rifleman Harinder Singh of Army’s 32 Rashtriya Rifles (RR) camped at Kanzalwan area of Gurez died on spot after the grenade exploded in his hands while taking position during an ambush in Bagtore forests. July 22: Two infiltration bids by suspected militants from across the Indo-Pak border in Jammu and Kathua were foiled by security personnel with one intruder and a soldier (BSF jawan) being killed. July 25: Two policemen were killed in two different attacks. Constable Altaf Ahmed lost his life in Bijbehara attack while SOG man M.Sayed was killed in Sopore when during the dead of night militants attacked their vehicle.

Aug1:  Four militants were reportedly killed in an encounter in Keran sector of Kupwara district. Aug2:  Unidentified persons attacked a cop Firdous Baba with axe and decamped with his service rifle from Pattan main market. Aug3:  Suspected militants snatched a rifle from the security guard of Session Judge at Qamarabad Qamarwari area of Srinagar city.  Aug6: An Army soldier Naik, BamoDharThapawas Wednesday killed in a fierce gun-battle with a group of heavily-armed militants near the Line of Control in Karnah sector of north Kashmir’s Kupwara district. Massive protests rocked Palhalan area after police claimed to have recovered a militant’s body from a house in Kreeri area during a search operation. Police said it recovered a body of a militant Mudasir Sofi who had snatched INSAS rifle from cop a few days back from Suraipora, Kreeri. Aug 7: Private security guard Nazir Ahmed resident of Maindanpora Lolab succumbed to his injuries. He was shot at outside SMHS hospital while purchasing medicine. Aug8: Army claimed that in an encounter in the Tangdhar Sector of Frontier District Kupwara, Army neutralized three militants. Aug11: Pampore shuts over the 6th death anniversary of Shiekh Aziz. Aug12: Railway Protection Force personnel Rajinder Singh of Kanglora Tral shot dead at Malangpora Pulwama.  Shutdown against police ‘atrocities’ in Shopian town. Aug13: A civilian Manzoor Qasab and two cops Mehraj Ahmed and Muhammad Yaqoob died in militant attack near Galandar Pampore. Aug16: Two BSF personnel Rudal Yadav and Sukhbir Yadav and four others were injured when militants fired upon their vehicle near Koil village of Pulwama.

Aug18: Militant killed in encounter in Tanghdar. Aug19: Army on Wednesday said two militants were killed by soldiers in an ongoing encounter at Farkein area of Keran Sector in Kupwara district.

Aug 20: SMC Enforcement Officer arrested while accepting bribe.

Aug 21: Militants and government forces exchanged fire in Sopore. No casualty reported. Aug23: Father and son were killed after Pakistani Rangers resorted to mortar shelling in RS Pora along LOC in Jammu.

Aug24: Four militants and two soldiers were killed—and three more soldiers injured—in two separate encounters near the Line of Control in this north Kashmir district.

Aug25: One militant and a soldier was killed in Kalaroos encounter.

Aug26: One more militant was killed in Kalaroos encounter with Indian Army. Aug30:  An army soldier from 28 RR was killed during a brief exchange of fire with militants in Kalaroos Kupwara forests.

September 2: Three Jaish-e-Muhammad militants Showkat Ahmed Dar son of Ghulam Qadir resident of Aglar Kandi Pulwama, Altaf Ahmed Rather son of Muhammad Abdullah resident of Chak Badrinath Pulwama and Farooq Ahmed Dar son Ghulam Ahmed resident of Dalwan Budgam were killed during an encounter at Hanjan Rajpora area of Pulwama district. Three army personnel including a Major Inderjit Singh, Naik Pushpinder Singh both residents of Punjab and Sepoy R.Ranjit of Tamil Nadu were killed and four others injured when an armoured vehicle carrying the soldiers of 41 RR met an accident near Sarkuli Kalaroos forest area of frontier district Kupwara.

Sep4: Flash floods create havoc in Jammu and Kashmir. At least 70 person died in the state. Scores of areas submerged in water. Scores of bridges and houses were washed away. Sep5: Flood furry continues to claim precious lives all across state of Jammu and Kashmir. Sep 6: Flood hits most parts of uptown areas of Srinagar city. Sep7: Black Day for Srinagar city. Flood wreaks havoc in Srinagar city. Lal Chowk and other business centres submerged. 282 persons lost their lives in Jammu and Kashmir floods.

Sep 8: Life paralyzed in Kashmir Valley due to heavy floods. Scores of areas of Srinagar city including city centre Lal Chowk remained submerged for weeks as a result life came to stand still. Sep 9: Four militants were killed in an encounter in Laribal near Rajwar and Furkian in Kupwara district. unidentified persons shot dead two persons including a civilian and CRPF personnel in Down Town areas of Srinagar city. Sep17: Army claimed that it killed two militants in Machil sector.

Sep19: Four militants were killed in Tangdar Sector. Se 30: A militant was killed in an encounter with Indian Army in Lolab forest area in Kupwara district.

October 3: A local militant Showkat Ahmed Qasba was killed in a fierce gun battle with Government Forces in South Kashmir’s Batapora Charsoo Awantipora area of Pulwama district. Oct 8: Eight civilians were killed in different incidents of cease fire violations along Line of Control in Jammu region. Oct13: An army soldier from 30 RR Sahib Singh was killed in Wadarbala forests in Handwara after militants attacked a patrolling party. Oct16: Three Army soldiers were injured after militants detonated IED when a convoy was passing through Chakla Rafiabad area of Baramulla district.

Oct 20: A cop Constable Waseem Ahmed (3613/S)  posted in Nigeen Police Station Srinagar who was allegedly injured  during a massive stone-pelting incident near Duck Park on Fore Shore Road in July this year succumbed to his injury in a Srinagar hospital on Monday morning.

Oct 23: A police constable Muhammad Rafiq was shot dead by unidentified gunmen at Hasanpora Bijbehara town of South Kahsmir’s Islamabad district. Oct28:  A militant and a Junior Commissioned Officer of Indian Army was killed in an encounter in Zachildara forests of Handwara town of Frontier district Kupwara. Oct29:   Two militants were killed in an encounter in Zachildara forests of Handwara town of Frontier district Kupwara.

November 3: Two youth were killed and two others critically injured after soldiers of Army’s 53 Rashtriya Rifles opened fire on a car in Chattergam area of Budgam district. All the youth were from Nowgam area and police identified them as Faisal Ahmad Bhat son of Muhammad Yusuf, Mehraj-u-din Ahmad Dar son Ghulam Muhammad, Muhammad Zahid Naqash son Muhammad Ayub, and Muhammad Shaker Bhat son Abdur Rehman. Among them Faisal and Mehraj-u-Din have died. Nov 8:  Soldier and a girl were killed in cross border firing along LOC in Uri sector. Nov14: Two local militants Muhammad Abbas Malla and Malik Manzoor were killed in an encounter with Indian Army while Army shot dead a civilian Tariq Ahmed Bhat at Chenigam after people protest against the damage incurred to property by Indian Army and raised pro-freedom slogans. A civilian Zahoor Ahmed Najar was killed reportedly in a fake encounter at Lach Mawar Handwara while two Indian security agency men responsible for his abduction also received injuries when a grenade they tied to civilian body went off. Nov16: Suspected militants Sunday shot dead a political party Ghulam Mohi-u-Din Dar in Dogripora Awantipora in south Kashmir's Pulwama district. Nov 20: Police killed three militants namely Shiraz Ahmad Ganai of Pinjura Pulwama and Muhammad Asif of Kulgam in Tral area of Pulwama district. The identity of the third militant could not be ascertained.

Nov 21: A teenager Zakir Ahmad Tantray, resident of Kulmoona injured in an explosion in forest area of Hafrada Vilgam in frontier district of Kupwara succumbed to his injuries at a hospital in Srinagar. Nov 27: At least 12 persons including five civilians, four militants, three army personnel were killed in a fierce encounter between a group of suspected militants and Army soldiers at village Kathar in Arina sector Jammu. Nov30: Unidentified gunmen shot dead NC Sarpanch Muhammad Sultan Bhat at Nazneenpora Shopian. December 1: A Sarpanch Sheeraz Ahmed was critically injured when gunmen fired upon him at Sogun Shopian. Dec2: Six militants and a Junior Commissioned Officer of Army were killed and three soldiers injured in an encounter at LOC in Nowgam Sector of north Kashmir’s Handwara tehsil. Dec 3: A CRPF Sub-Inspector Shamsher Singh was killed in militant attack at Pohu Pulwama. Dec5: In multiple attacks two days ahead of the Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Srinagar, militants in an audacious attack stormed an Army camp in Uri in Baramulla district, killing 11 security personnel, including a Lieutenant Colonel, and targeted a police party in Shopian, hurled grenade on a cavalcade of an Independent candidate in restive Tral resulting in the death of two civilians while two top LeT commander was killed in an encounter in the outskirts of Srinagar.  In Friday’s bloody multiple attacks, 21persons including 11 Army men, 3 policemen, 8 militants and two civilians lost their lives. Dec 8: Narendra Modi addresses his maiden rally in Srinagar. Dec12: A civilian, Fayaz Ahmad Dar son of Ghulam Rasool, a resident of Laam who was injured in the grenade blast in Tral area of south Kashmir's Pulwama district on December 5, succumbed to injuries at SMHS Hospital in Srinagar, taking the death toll to three. Unknown gunmen abducted Haigam Sopore Sarpanch Beedar Sahab and shot him dead later on in Sopore town. Dec16: The 141 people mostly school children were killed when Tehreek Taliban terrorists stormed an army-run school in the northwestern city of Peshawar on Tuesday and systematically went from room to room, shooting children during an eight-hour killing spree. Dec 18: An unidentified LeT militant was killed in an encounter in Silkot area of Kupwara district. One Army jawan was also injured during the encounter. Dec 20: Political activist tuned village headman, Ghulam Ahmad Bhat son of Haji Muhammad Jamal who had survived in a militant attack last year was shot dead by unknown gunmen on Saturday in Boami hamlet of restive Sopore town in North Kashmir’s Baramulla district. Dec 20: PDP emerged as single largest party bagging 28 seats followed by BJP (25), NC(15) and Congress party with 12 seats. (CNS)
