CNA Training

In Indiana, CNA training is an excellent way to begin your career in the medical field. This state demands more time than federal requirements, but will provide you with all the information and skills you need to be successful as a CNA. In order to sit for the written and skills exam and earn your certification, you’ll need to complete 105 hours of CNA training, 75 of which will need to be completed in the clinical setting, where you will receive hands-on experience caring for patients.

Luckily, there are more than 100 CNA training classes that have been approved by the state, so it will be relatively easy for you to find a course and begin your training right away.

Transferring Your CNA Training Certification

If you have earned your CNA training certification in another state and are now moving to Indiana, you can apply with the Department of Health and have your CNA training certification transferred. This does require a few steps, and you will need to complete each one to ensure you are able to work as a CNA in this state.

In order to qualify for a transfer, you must have an active CNA license in your current state of residence, and it must be in good standing. You will also need to be able to prove that you worked as a CNA for at least 8 hours in the previous two years.

Once you have done this, you’ll need to complete the following steps to avoid having to take CNA training again.

Contact Ivy Tech Community College and download the CNA application. Ivy Tech delivers all of the CNA written exams in the state of Indiana, and even though you’ve already taken the exam, you will need to take this test in Indiana if you wish to become a CNA in the state. In order to pass, you’ll need to answer 80 out of 100 questions correctly.

Once you have the application, gather together the documents Ivy Tech requires. This typically includes a copy of your current certification and a copy of identification. Make sure the certification shows the expiration date and registry number. You’ll also need to include a $65 testing fee.

Mail all the documents to the address provided to you on the application. You’ll then need to wait for Ivy Tech to contact you by mail or phone. They will let you know whether you qualify to take test, where it will be, and what time you should arrive. This generally takes place within 30 days of when you mail in the application.

CNA Training Certification Renewal

If you already have your CNA training certification in Indiana, you’ll receive a form in the mail every two years a few months before your certification is set to expire. You’ll need to fill out this form, include any fees and documents required, and mail the form back to the State Nursing Registry. You’ll also need to include documentation that proves you completed at least 12 hours of in-service training and worked at least 8 hours in the last two years as a CNA. If you allow your certification to relapse and did not work as a CNA, you may either have to retake the state exam or retake CNA training.
