2014-12-19

You combed over CMJ’s picks for the best albums of 2014; you listened to the four-hours playlist of our favorite songs; you watched the most exciting and the most sublime videos of the year; you jammed to the remixes that made our office bounce for the past 12 months; and you saw the albums that topped the college and non-commercial radio charts.

Not fully sated yet? Us either. So we asked a swath of industry folks and musicians alike to tell us what they loved in 2014 and to give us the scoop on the albums we can expect to make the best of 2015 lists. We noticed a bit of a pattern: the college radio community is really into food (which we love), while the artist and industry community is focused on new music, touring and travel (all of which we love, too!).

George Clanton, Mirror Kisses
Your five favorite albums of 2014:

5. Ariel Pink – pom pom

I’m not exactly the most well versed person on new music. In fact this list should be called “new music I listened to in 2014” instead of the BEST becuz I’m not qualified to make that call. I think album is partially a return to form, and partially a bunch of garbage. U can catch me drunkenly spouting off contradictory opinions on this album at your house party.

4. Mac Demarco – Salad Days

I really like Mac DeMarco’s music but I’m getting sick of seeing his silly antics it makes me feel like I’m buying into some adult version of One Direction. His face is in my news feed every day doing something gross. ayyy lmao

3. The Moles – Flashbacks and Dream Sequences

This is more of a retrospective compilation. The Moles are my favorite rock band. Every song is so authentic and catchy and sunglasses-level cool without feeling too pretentious.

2. 18 Carat Affair – Adventures in Schizophrenia

The latest release from my idol Denys Parker. It was the last album to be released on the vaporwave label Fortune 500 (rip).

1. [PHYSICS] – Not Even Real

Technically a December 2013 release who cares? Turn a blind eye for two weeks and its 2014 and it was my favorite thing this year. Another one from the dead Fortune 500 label. This short album is so overlooked I don’t even understand its so fukin tight. Best song: “All the Time”

Album you’re most looking forward to in 2015:

Supposedly The Moles are coming out with a new album in 2015, after something like a 20 year hiatus. I hear a couple of shoegaze bands are getting back together to record as well. I totally back that.

5. Persona La Ave – Relation / Temptation

Album you’re most looking forward to in 2015:

the album i am most looking forward to in 2015 is one that might not happen, but i really hope Hannah Diamond puts out a proper full length. i know it might be counter to PC music’s style to do a proper LP but i just love her choice of sounds and her encompassing lyricism. it seems very basic and plastic on the surface but grows more sincere and complex as you listen to the songs hundreds and hundreds of times in a row. i think with a full body of work she could show really successfully what people see in her and kind of bridge the gap between DIY and pop star. i feel a lot of people are trying to bridge that gap but i do not think many people will be as successful at it as Hannah.

New Year’s resolution(s):

my new year’s resolution is to use the internet more. i kind of disappeared from the internet // social media world for the majority of 2014, and now that i’m easing my way back in to using it, i am again realizing the beautiful aspects of it. at the beginning of the year i felt really stifled and overwhelmed at the same time by internet culture, and i do recommend to anyone taking a break for a while and reflecting on basic human characteristics and the absurdity of the seriousness of the internet music community. that being said, i do think that with a critical eye, media literacy and personal filtration methods that the internet can be a very inspiring and wonderful place to discover, connect and learn. also i just generally miss watching videos of cats.

New Year’s resolution(s):

Be better at whatever.

Jared Samuel, Invisible Familiars
Your five favorite albums of 2014:

Cibo Matto : Hotel Valentine

(granted i’m biased cuz i got to play some bass n stuff on this, but…) i was a fan of theirs since before i ever had the joy of workin with em, and the thrill i got upon first hearing Stereotype A as a younger record store clerk is only magnified every time i listen to this record. they keep getting better and it makes me psyched about the passing of time.

Jolie Holland : Wine Dark Sea

this record has already gotten favorable comparisons for its abilities to travel to all the places that music has been, from the underground on up to the farthest heavens, but comparisons inevitably evoke (invoke?) the past, and it doesnt seem- despite amazing abilities of remembrance- that Jolie has any need for nostalgia. this record is fucking timeless. i love her.

Country Funk II : (various artists, Light in the Attic records)

while technically not “new Music” it hits me just as hard and feels super fresh and relevant, despite some of these recordings being 40 years or older. favs on this one are Kenny Rogers’ low speed stoney car chase “Tulsa Turnaround” and Bob Darin’s “Me & Mr. Hohner” shows that not only have i been sleeping on how soulful that dude was, but also that he had a hilariously on-point distaste for authority. Willis Alan Ramsey has basically all of Leon Russell’s band with him and that’s never a bad idea for the early 70s. LITA records are always finding the best stuff and then sharing it with the world in really deluxe packages. solid.

Unknown Mortal Orchestra : II

already a fan of the first album. the second one blooms more with each repeated listen. got to catch em live on same bill at the End of the Road Festival (also best-of year) and they fucking blew my mind a bit.

i’m at least 2-3 decades too young to’ve been around to catch any of the “great rock power trios” but UMO live made me feel some of the words i’ve heard used to describe Groundhogs in their prime or the Soft Machine or the Jimi Hendrix Experience. incredible improvisatory skills, great attention to songcraft, sounding full despite lack of prerecorded backing tracks… what then was standard and now constitutes “bold choices”. haha. but they knocked my socks clean off.

- Too many honorables to mention, but Nicole Atkins’ Slow Phaser, Higgins Waterproof Black Magic Band, Ghost of a Saber Tooth Tiger, Deerhoof, Buffalo Daughter, tUnE-yArDs, Leonard Cohen, Run the Jewels, welcome back Sharon Jones!

Album you’re most looking forward to in 2015:

Whatever albums are born into a nation where the police and our elected officials are held accountable for their actions in all of the same ways as are the people whom they purport to serve. But barring that, I’ll bet that the new Nels Cline/Julian Lage recordings are gonna be amazing. and i’ll probably buy at least 2 copies of the new Robert Wyatt release (always one extra of his, to turn on a friend). I’ll purchase it even if it’s merely a “career overview.” cuz sweet merciful mother: what a career.

New Year’s resolution(s):

don’t believe in em, but i’d love it if i kept getting better at most things, so that may or may not involve giving up smoking.

I’m gonna leave out releases that I’ve put out on MJ MJ cause like, most of my top 5′s came out on my label. Please note that all of these records came out on really really awesome small labels that deserve your patronage GO BUY THEIR STUFF IT’S THE BEST. Also most of these bands are from Minneapolis, an often overlooked city stop ignoring us cause we’re not New York or LA. Also I’m cheating and putting in seven ’cause music is awesome.

I’m putting out a couple really incredible tapes next year. American Cream (who made one of the most brilliant and criminally overlooked psychedelic albums of 2013) Grapefruit and Discoverer, to name a few. Also I’ll probably end up finishing my own album as Vacation Dad at some point in 2015. Pretty jazzed about all of that. I honestly don’t really pay attention to music news outside of my own reality so I’m pretty clueless as to what big bands are putting out what in 2015.
