AFTER A WARM DAY ON TUESDAY...SIGNIFICANT WEATHER CHANGES WITH
MUCH COLDER AIR ARE HEADED FOR THE SAN FRANCISCO AND MONTEREY BAY
AREAS BY LATE WEDNESDAY AND LASTING THROUGH THE END OF THE WORK
WEEK.
A STRONG COLD FRONT WILL PUSH ACROSS THE AREA LATE IN THE DAY ON
WEDNESDAY...WITH SCATTERED RAIN SHOWERS POSSIBLE BY LATE IN THE
DAY ON WEDNESDAY ACROSS THE NORTH BAY. THE FRONT WILL SPREAD SOUTH
OVERNIGHT WEDNESDAY AND MOVE THROUGH THE ENTIRE AREA BY EARLY
THURSDAY MORNING. WITH BLUSTERY NORTHWEST WINDS OF 15-25
MPH...STRONGEST NEAR THE COAST...THE COLDEST AIR OF THE WINTER
SEASON SO FAR WILL ARRIVE TO THE AREA.
TEMPERATURES WILL STRUGGLE TO RECOVER ON THURSDAY. HIGH
TEMPERATURES DURING THE DAY ON THURSDAY WILL RANGE FROM THE UPPER
40S TO LOW 50S IN THE LOWER ELEVATIONS...BUT THE HIGHER TERRAIN
WILL ONLY BE IN THE UPPER 20S TO MID 30S FOR HIGHS. THIS WILL BE
FOLLOWED BY A COLD NIGHT THURSDAY WITH WIDESPREAD UPPER 20S AND
LOWER 30S...AND LOW TEMPERATURES NEAR FREEZING EVEN IN THE URBAN
AREAS AROUND THE SAN FRANCISCO BAY. HIGHS FRIDAY WILL BE SIMILAR
TO THURSDAY...AND FRIDAY NIGHT WILL AGAIN BRING LOW TEMPERATURES
NEAR FREEZING IN THE MAJOR URBAN AREAS...WITH WIDESPREAD MID TO
UPPER 20S IN THE RURAL AREAS AWAY FROM THE COAST. SATURDAY NIGHT
WILL ALSO BE NEARLY AS COLD...BEFORE SLOW WARMING BEGINS BY
SUNDAY.
ACCOMPANYING THE COLD TEMPERATURES WILL BE LARGE DROPS IN THE SNOW
LEVELS ACROSS THE AREA. LATE WEDNESDAY NIGHT AND FOR THE DAY
ON THURSDAY...SNOW LEVELS WILL DROP TO AROUND 2000 FEET SOUTH OF
THE BAY AREA AND TO AROUND 1500 IN THE NORTH BAY...AS LOW AS 1200
FEET IN NORTHERN NAPA AND SONOMA COUNTIES.
THERE WILL NOT BE MUCH MOISTURE ACCOMPANYING THE SYSTEM...SO RAIN
AND SNOW AMOUNTS WILL BE LIGHT. SNOW ACCUMULATIONS ABOVE 1500 FEET
OF A DUSTING TO A FEW TENTHS OF AN INCH ARE POSSIBLE THURSDAY. IN
THE VERY HIGHEST TERRAIN OF THE AREA ABOVE 2500 FEET...AROUND AN
INCH WILL BE POSSIBLE THURSDAY...WITH THE GREATEST POSSIBILITY FOR
HIGHER SNOW TOTALS ACROSS THE COASTAL MOUNTAINS OF MONTEREY COUNTY.
ISOLATED THUNDER WILL BE POSSIBLE ON THURSDAY...ESPECIALLY OVER
THE PACIFIC OCEAN AND THE ADJACENT COASTLINE. SIGNIFICANT
THUNDERSTORMS ARE NOT EXPECTED.
