JOE CASELY HAYFORD UNVEILS NEW COLLECTION FOR JOHN LEWIS THIS AUTUMN WINTER 2012

This September John Lewis unveils its sixth exclusive collection with contemporary menswear designer Joe Casely-Hayford. Influenced by counter culture of the 1950s such as early English Rock and Roll, the Ace Café and The 59 Club, the collection takes mid-20th century influences and translates them for 21st century audience.

The Autumn Winter 2012 collection continues the brand ethos of celebrating classic design through a series of collaborations with some of Britain’s finest heritage manufacturers. Collaborators for this season will include heritage manufacturers, such as Barbour, Liberty, Cooper and Stollbrand and Abraham Moon alongside a new collaboration for this collection with London-based manufacturer, Gloverall.

Matt McCormack, Head of Menswear Buying at John Lewis, says; “Joe’s collection for Autumn Winter 2012 really exhibits his ability to create timeless pieces, with meticulous attention to detail at every stage of the design and manufacturing process. A star piece this season is without doubt is the BERWICK – a great overcoat that fuses together the traditional biker and the more formal Chesterfield overcoat.”

Joe Casely-Hayford, says; “Each season I aim to push the design-led components of my collection further. For Autumn Winter 2012 I have created a lining for my outerwear pieces that uses intricate designs from salvaged tiles. Each tile presents a pictorial representation of English history to create a tableau of cultural, craft and aesthetic attributes of the past 150 years.”

The collection includes 33 pieces spanning outwear, knitwear, shirting and trousers, with prices ranging from £28 for a pique crew neck t-shirt to £325 for a long bezique twill black coat. As with previous collections, Joe punctuates the range with pops of colour and Autumn Winter 2012 will see bright pink and red melton under collars feature. The collection will launch in store and online at www.johnlewis.com  in September.

OUTERWEAR

New for Autumn Winter 2012, Joe has partnered with East London manufacturers Gloverall to redefine the legendary MONTY Duffle - a strong British symbol of style during the 1950s. The MONTY is a slimmed down, shorter coat retaining all the authentic functional features and details of its Fifties counterpart: jute front toggle loops, vintage wooden toggles and cotton webbing facings. The shell is made from sturdy 950 gram felted wool and finished with contrast yoke panels in British Millerain waxed cotton.

A key piece for the season is the BERWICK. Integral to the theme of the collection, the overcoat fuses elements of the classic perfecto Biker Jacket with the traditional Chesterfield - two great symbols of British style. Made from a 50 /50 wool cotton mix fabric, the fabric is supplied by one of Joe’s favourite woollen mills, Abraham Moon of Yorkshire.

The tailored garments in the Autumn Winter 2012 collection are built around Joe’s bestselling jacket style, the ARPAA. The SARACEN is a classic two button single breasted jacket. Its pattern is related to the classic Herringbone design reconfigured to make a distinctive new statement. Details include contrast suede jets above the hip pocket flaps and matching, lightly padded suede elbow patches, to reflect the biker theme.

New for this season is a signature outerwear lining design made up of an assortment of individually handpicked vintage blue and white British ceramic tiles dating from 1980 and 1930. The tile lining will feature in selected jackets and coats in the collection.

Additionally, the favourite heat sealed ORDE [Ventile Mac], produced with Cooper and Stollbrand, will feature in classic camel, red and navy for Autumn Winter 2012.

KNITWEAR

After the sell-out success of last winters’ collaboration with the Irish knitter Bonner, Joe has once again collaborated with the manufacturer. For Autumn Winter 2012 the focus will be on simple, graphic designs to reflect the clean geometric lines of the 1950s theme. Made from British worsted wool, the knitwear has a chunky outdoors look with moss stitch detail and blocked tones.

For Autumn Winter 2012 Joe will re-visit his collaboration with Peregrine to create the perfect Shetland crew neck knit with saddle shoulder seams and chunky 2x2 rib. This piece adds a strong injection of colour to an otherwise muted colour palette in the collection.

Additional Italian knitwear pieces for this season include a small range of a new mixed gauge twin-sets, comprising a heavy gauge cable knit based on a rare vintage pattern from Scotland and a lighter gauge knitted polo shirt in a striking colour block design. To conclude knitwear, Joe has reinterpreted a vintage Shetland fisherman’s knitting pattern from the 1950s to create a classic half Zip sweater.

SHIRTING

One of the mainstays of the collection is a small range of printed shirts. For Autumn Winter 2012 the shirting will include the Biker dove symbol printed in an exclusive engineered pattern and inspired by The 59 Club.

Italian denim, flannel and needle point shirts in Prince of Wales check also feature in the collection.
