Description:

Aosta Valley is the smallest Italian region and is located at the "hub" of the Alps, surrounded by Europe's four highest mountains (Mont Blanc-Monte Bianco, Matterhorn-Cervino, Monte Rosa and Gran Paradiso), all over four thousand metres high.

The region is like an island among the mountains, and, over the centuries, this has conditioned its history, language, and administrative and political life and encouraged the development of an original collective identity.

Because of these specific characteristics, the region got from the Italian State a special autonomous status, which has enabled the valley to satisfy its aspirations, at least in part. Our aim in these pages is to provide Internet Navigators with a key that will allow them to understand these characteristics of Aosta Valley better.

THE HEART OF THE ALPS AT THE CENTRE OF EUROPE Hotels, restaurants, mountain refuges, cultural and artistic events, manufacturing. The Aosta Valley represent all that and much more. This island in the heart of the Alps merits indepht exploration. The following pages will act as your guide on this voyage of discovery. In particular the Voilà La Vallée page offers an updated run-down on what's on in the Aosta Valley and the region's various attraction every month. Summer or Winter, on the ski slopes or inside the keep of some historic castle, the Aosta Valley can't wait to meet you.

The Aosta Valley (Italian: Valle d'Aosta, French: Vallée-d'Aoste or Val-d'Aoste, Franco-Provençal: Val d'Outa) is a mountainous Region in north-western Italy. It is bordered by France to the west, Switzerland to the north and the region of Piedmont to the south and east.

With an area of 3,263 km² and a population of about 120,000, it is the smallest, least populous, and least densely populated region of Italy. It is the only Italian region which has no provinces (provincial administrative functions are provided by the regional government, the province being dissolved in 1945 [1].), and is divided into 74 comunes (Italian: comuni); see: Comunes of the Aosta Valley.

Some communes, concentrated in the valley bottomlands, are Francophone, in the Lys Valley is concentrated a Walser German speaking minority. The regional capital is Aosta.
