Increasingly more home, apartment and office owners are looking for ways to go green. By going green, you will not only help the planet, but in some instances you can make tax deductions at the end of the year. The efficiency of light bulbs is becoming more important for homeowners, looking to save money on their energy bills. Lighting technology has become more energy efficient as a result. LED lighting leads the way offering low energy use and a high quality of illumitation.

We are all familiar with the way a traditional incandescent light bulb works. These bulbs are packed with gas and a filament, which is very thin and easy to break. Passing electricity through the element causes it to heat up to a very high temperature. The high-energy consumption of incandescent bulbs is caused because the bulb requires a lot of energy to heat the filament until it glows. The thin filaments in incandescent bulbs are prone to failing because of the delicate nature of their construction. The repeated heating process affects the structure of the filament creating thin spots, which then break, requiring a new bulb.

Halogen light bulbs are an alternative to incandescent lighting. Halogen lamps are made of quartz, the area containing the filament is much smaller and is filled with halogen gas. These types of bulbs last longer and are usually brighter than incandescent bulbs. Halogen lighting is often used in cinemas, TV studios and on the sets of movie productions.
These bulbs are still heat inefficient, however. The current best selling halogen bulb is the MR16 halogen light.

LED lamps (Light Emitting Diode) offer the brightness of halogen lamps with much greater energy efficiency. In a LED bulb, the engineering on which it is based is completely distinctive from the other two options. LED's produce very little heat because they don't have a filament. Light is produced when electricity is passed through the diode. Diodes use much less energy, brighter light and a longer bulb life. An ideal replacement for a halogen bulb is an LED lens reflector bulb, which is perfect for applications up to 20 watts. An LED lens reflector bulb is designed to burn steadily for 50,000 hours before requiring replacement. 50,000 hours is the equivalent of 5 years of constant use, or over 30 years if used for 4 - 5 hours per day. Because they are over 90% more efficient than a halogen bulb, they only use pennies worth of electricity annually. These benefits make LED lighting in your home a much more environmentally friendly option.

There are many applications for LED lighting outdoors.

The large choice of colour options make LED's ideal for outside use, as well as being suitable as spotlights or security flood lighting. Replacing old inefficient light fittings with modern, low energy LED fittings is an easy way to reduce your energy consumption as well as providing a new look for your living spaces.
