Every week, I read the commentaries written by my fellow interns and think: “I should really write one of those posts.”  Well, I finally got around to writing it. I have given accounts of my work every Wednesday during our group discussions, so instead of reflecting on my work again, I figured I would give the group some insight into what it is like working in the LAND Studio office.  I hope that I might be able to convey a sense of place for the office.

The elevator doors open into a large conference room, oftentimes full of strangers from organizations who have decided to have their meetings in a “cool” place.  The large warehouse-style windows overlook the parking lot of the West Side Market with the city’s skyline as a prominent backdrop.  Exposed brick walls adorned with artwork for pending projects complement the exposed duct work and large wooden beams that run across the ceiling.  Near the elevator doors lies an assortment of bicycles, some on the floor and some on bike racks mounted to the wall.  Surely, within a few minutes of walking into the space, Daisy, the office dog, prances up to greet visitors. People congregate in the kitchen for small chats over coffee. The sounds of people walking on the floor above us and workers chatting make the space fairly noisy yet alive as work continues. The front windows look over West 25th Street and Market Square, which are sometimes bustling with traffic and are sometimes oddly calm depending on the market’s hours.  As for the people, coworkers tend to be relaxed and personable but active and responsible.  It is a very collaborative bunch always willing to lend a hand and always full of positive energy.  At times, the optimism and excitement for projects are overwhelming for concepts that most people would say cannot or should not be entertained (i.e., a giant temporary reading nest at the Cleveland Public Library).  The environment is nurturing, it is fresh, and it is funky, all in one.
