Evolutionary speaking, men like big butts and they cannot lie. It’s written in their DNA to go after the perky and healthy childbearing hips for the continuation of the human race. But since men don’t usually pop out babies, where do women’s soft spot for an ample male derrière come from?

Despite intensive research on why men are all about that bass, there is apparently only one documented study that attempts to describe the female attraction to the male bass.

Dr. Kerri Johnson of UCLA, a leading specialist in the psychology of human attraction explains in her paper on attractiveness of body shape in motion focused on waist and hips, “Women aren’t likely attracted to the butt itself — as its own separate entity — but rather attracted to how it enhances male body movement.”

Well that explains why the following gif is so absolutely hypnotic…

Unsurprisingly, the study found that for heterosexual females, bodies that are perceived to be masculine are more likely to seem attractive. But where does the judgment of masculinity come from? According to her research partner, Dr. Louis G. Tassinary of Texas A&M University, it’s all in the body movement, “A masculine walk is one in which the shoulders ‘twist’ more relative to the natural ‘twist’ of the hips. In old school terms, think John Wayne vs. Marilyn Monroe.”

Johnson also finds that there might be a Golden Rule of muscularity when it comes to butt attractiveness, since butts are basically all muscle. She sets the record straight that bigger is not necessarily better, because having large bulky muscles are generally perceived as less attractive than a well-toned, moderately sized tush, “There’s a sweet spot — just enough muscles, but not enough that you look scary or formidable,”

However, she does point out that aspects of personality can ultimately influence attractiveness. In other words; no matter how perfect his ass may look, things are going to fizzle out if you think that talking to him is duller than talking to a wall.
