The National Association of Environmental Professionals (NAEP) has selected the Port of San Diego’s Integrated Planning Vision for the Environmental Excellence Award for Public Involvement/Partnership.
The Port of San Diego has been conducting an Integrated Planning initiative that spans 6,000 acres of land and water and is often referred to as “the future of the Port.” The goal of this process is to set a blueprint for baywide development. This will create certainty for developers and other community members by codifying a vision for how future projects will fulfill public goals.
“As part of our mission, the Port of San Diego is an environmental steward of San Diego Bay and the surrounding tidelands. This award recognizes that, in our planning for the future, we are being proactive and inclusive in our continued protection of the bay’s natural resources. We couldn’t be more proud,” said Robert “Dukie” Valderrama, Chairman of the Board of Port Commissioners.
Every year, the NAEP Awards Committee selects projects from various organizations that provide outstanding environmental contributions. Their Public Involvement/Partnership Award recognizes projects that provide innovative, creative and effective engagement opportunities for parties that are interested in or potentially affected by a decision.
“One of the cornerstones of Integrated Planning has been our public outreach strategy, which has resulted in meaningful feedback and recommendations from our stakeholders. It ensures that the overall outcome of the Port Master Plan Update will reflect the opinions and ideas of the public while providing certainty and clear guidance for development,” said Port of San Diego Commissioner Ann Moore.
Public outreach methods for the Integrated Planning Vision included more than 100 individual and group interviews, an online survey, and several community workshops held throughout the region.
NAEP will be presenting its Environmental Excellence Awards at its conference in Durham, North Carolina, March 27-30, 2017. The Public Involvement/Partnership Award is one of nine awards. Other categories include Conservation Programs, Education Excellence, Environmental Management and Planning Integration.
The Port encourages continued public participation and involvement as it moves forward with the Port Master Plan Update.
