SAN DIEGO, CA, June 3, 2016 – San Diego Solar Day is the city’s first event of its kind to celebrate a shared vision around the power of solar energy to promote healthy lives, create a healthy economy and sustain a healthy planet. The event will take place on Saturday, June 18 at the Reuben H. Fleet Science Center from 12:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Pronounced by the City of San Diego as the official San Diego Solar Day, the event will bring together esteemed community leaders, solar experts and tomorrow’s solar champions, middle and high school students from around the county. Three students will present their visions of how children can drive the adoption of renewable energy that will shape our world.

“The fact of the matter is we need to make a difference today in order to see a change for future generations,” said Mike Teresso, president of Baker Electric Solar. “There’s no question solar energy, a renewable resource that sunny San Diego is perfectly positioned to take advantage of, represents the ideal energy source for homeowners and businesses alike. We hope San Diego Solar Day lights the way for children to build a healthy and sustainable planet they can be proud of.”

In addition to the three student presenters, San Diego business and community leaders’, Baker Electric Solar and CleanTech will reaffirm their commitment to sustainable energy solutions for the good of the economy, the environment and future generations. Their vision will emphasize San Diego’s groundbreaking adoption of and leadership in renewable energy to the rest of the world. The kick-off event will also offer entertainment, food, refreshments and fun for participants of all ages. Additionally, attendees will be granted free admission to the Reuben H. Fleet Science Center until 6 p.m.

“The continued growth of the San Diego region’s solar industry is a significant reason why we are ranked third in the nation for clean technology leadership,” said Cleantech San Diego President and CEO Jason Anderson. “As a proven leader in solar innovation and adoption, the San Diego region is truly a clean energy playground. San Diego Solar Day is the ideal venue to display our solar strengths and inspire the next generation of renewable energy champions and workers.”

This year’s presenters include: Dr. Steven Snyder, CEO of Reuben H. Fleet Science Center; Jason Anderson, President and CEO of Cleantech San Diego; a representative for Councilman Todd Gloria’s office; James A. Floros, President and CEO of Jacobs & Cushman San Diego Food Bank; and Mike Teresso, President of Baker Electric Solar. Additionally, students from Reidy Creek Elementary, Calavera Hills Middle School, and Clairemont High School will be sharing their thoughts about how moving to solar energy as a community affects their future. To build on this aspect of the event, 2017’s San Diego Solar Day will include a Solar Science Challenge giving local students the opportunity to compete in the creation of innovative solar-powered solutions for their community.

The hosts of San Diego Solar Day encourage the entire community to participate in this day of public awareness by sharing photos on social media that highlight the raw beauty and joy of life in the San Diego sunshine. This could be as simple as posting a beautiful San Diego sunrise photo with a caption that includes #SDSolarDay.
