Genuine Scooters and its former CEO, Phil McCaleb, are pretty much responsible for the current North American scooter scene. Phil’s company brought the Stella, an improved version of the iconic Vespa PX of the 1970s, to the US at the turn of the century and inspired a new wave of Mod fashion and culture — to the point that Vespa returned to these shores after decades away. I was worried when Phil stepped down from the company after a long run at the helm earlier this year, but he said he had one more surprise. This is it, a Genuine, 170 cc “bad boy” scooter to bridge the gap between Mods and Rockers and make scooters seem “tough” again.
