Understandably I'm sure many of you don't have a great appreciation for rods under a certain length, nor do many feel you have a need for a 5' fly rod.
I ask you to please take the time to read the following field test report I received back in June from one of Connecticut's most experienced small steam specialist.
"Dear Andy,
Thank you for affording me the unique privilege of field testing your 5' Tribute Glass fly rod. I assure you that, despite the fact that it is probably the nicest looking fly rod I have ever handled, I had no trouble running it through the wringer, so to speak on my favorite Wild Trout stream for two full days. In all honesty I procrastinated for months before being of the appropriate mind to "struggle" with such a short rod, assuming it would be a Herculean trial to get out more than ten feet of fly line. To say that I was pleasantly surprised would be a grotesque understatement. First of all, it was such a pleasure bushwhacking through the woods for a mile or so with such a small, light stick! And when I finally made my first cast, it resulted in a 10" crazy, leaping wild Brown. Nice start! Luckily the Trout, the big boys included, were onto Giant Crane flies, so I knew this was going to be a day to remember. I had to remind myself that I was supposed to be evaluating your fly rod, which was difficult to do because it fished so effortlessly that it became "forgettable", in that all I had to think about was my target, and the fly just went there.......and I stopped thinking about the rod. But I forced myself, and after catching roughly fifty wild Browns between 8" and 14" (And losing many more, through no fault of the rod, some that looked larger than 14"!), and covering several miles of river, including every conceivable form of trout lair, I am pleased to share the following observations.:
Using a double taper #4 wt. line I needed about five feet to load it, and it would cast easily from eight to fifty feet, with a twenty five to thirty foot "sweet spot". Being a relatively "stiff" rod, it disliked holding a lot of line in the air; but it didn't have to, because it shoots line like a champ. I was fishing a lot of slow, slick water, and even though these were wild, spooky Trout, I was able to present my flies gently, and accurately.....VERY accurately. Hooking fish was a snap, and the rod played the fish very responsively, with plenty of backbone to keep them away from their fallout shelters. I didn't lose very many fish with this rod, and I had a lot of fun with them, as its stiffness belies its inherent sensitivity. One thing I loved about this five footer was that it opened up several lies that were essentially "un-fishable", even with a six foot glass rod! And it is in these difficult pockets, with the overhanging branches, and crazy back-eddies and undercut root banks that the bigger Trout hide. Even with my old line and ratty leader, I was able to make casts out to fifty feet with no problem. Loops were not as tight as a graphite rod, but that meant far fewer wind knots, with no noticeable difference in overall performance. Like I said, I had to keep reminding myself to pay attention to the rod, because it was very well behaved, requiring little supervision.
At the end of the first day, having landed roughly twenty five Trout, as the light slowly faded, I made one final cast to a rising fish, saw the take, set the hook and tried to hold onto the best fish of the day, only to lose it in a final spinning leap. I have been fishing small Trout streams for over 45 years, with Glass, Cane and Graphite, and can honestly say that the two days I spent putting this little beauty through its paces were among the best I have ever experienced. I even tied on a heavy #8 Giant Crane fly (Tied on a 3x heavy, 2x long WET fly hook!) and the little five footer delivered the goods. I am not one to gush, but suffice it to say that I can't say enough about this rod.......
Tight lines, Ed"
