I gain immeasurable pleasure from viewing this video.
Although it does contain the step by step processes of Mr. Degere during his building process, it is not an instructional video. It does give a very good synopsis of the steps involved.
I find it thoroughly entertaining on a very personal level. I believe it epitomizes how each of us who builds, or wishes to, or admires the craft feels about the process and the end result.
What I find most endearing is Mr. Degere’s conveyance of his passion for, and love of Flyfishing.
His opening and ending narratives are pure gold, insightful, inspiring, and, endearing.
I’m sure at times I have found myself quoting “Digger” to express my own passion for the “sport.”
I’ve shared this video with non-fishers to introduce them to what “trips my trigger”, “blows up my skirt”, “fuels the fire”. They all get it.
His enthusiasm is evident, infectious, and readily accepted and appreciated. Those that I have shared this with that have never held a rod, or have seen a trout ultimately if not immediately respect the endeavor of Flyfishing. This is not the competitive, rippin’ lips that they are exposed to in mainstream media and advertising.
“That old man is like a little kid when he talks about fishing.”
When taken into conjunction with the environs in which our quarry lives, our “sport” is elevated to a pursuit of bucolic serenity that is easily perceived by the uninitiated.
I think as a group we can convey these feelings to others; so that we can preserve the small foothold on what we have left that is natural and wild. Talk to people about water.
When I first moved to the Southwest, I attended my first Intertribal Native American Pow-Wow.
The Master of Ceremonies’ opening dialogue was about wealth and what was valuable.
“It’s not gold, it’s not silver, it’s not oil, it’s not about your portfolio or the Stock market, it is water!”
“We people in the Four Corners have always known this to be true.”
I listen to my Elders.
