Katie and Tucker both belong to and sail out of the Boston Yacht Club and because it’s a favorite shared place, they decided to tie the knot in nautical fashion at the club. Every detail was thoughtfully planned out to be in accordance with their coastal theme and Katie even gifted her “bridesmates” beautiful sailing cord bracelets. / Images by Sarah Jayne Photography.
Says Katie, “Tucker and I both belong to and sail out of the Boston Yacht Club. It is our favorite place to grab a bite to eat and sit out on the deck to enjoy drinks. The yacht club beautifully mixes the old classic yacht club feel with modern architecture. Tucker grew up in Marblehead and his Mom lives across the street from the Yacht Club so it is somewhere that we go often. We had a nautical theme to our wedding because of our common love of sailing that originally brought us together and still is something we both enjoy doing. The nautical theme is also fitting because most of our ‘bridesmates’ and ‘groomsmates’ are shared sailing competitors and teammates from different sailing teams around New England. Sailing is also how my parents met (at the age of 13) in Rhode Island so it is something that is important to both of our families as well. Both of our grandparents and parents have sailed since they were young. We also “tied the knot” literally at our ceremony tying a sailors wedding knot to secure our vows.
Katie & Tucker’s Love Story | Tucker and I were matched up at sailing tryouts at Roger Williams University in August 2007. We were both freshman who didn’t know many people but both loved to sail. Thankfully we sailed well together because we both made the team! Tucker and I competed up and down the coast together all the way through college. We were really close as skipper and crew until senior year when we started dating.
The Proposal | Tucker proposed in New Hampshire at his Dad’s farmhouse. It happened in mid February 2015 on a beautiful sunny snowy morning. We were at the top of his Dad’s massive sledding hill when his dad asked us to take a photo on one of the tubes as we were about to slide down. From behind me Tucker pulled the ring out of his pocket as I was smiling for the camera. I was so surprised that I barely got a yes out before he pushed off and slid all the way down the hill. At the bottom of the hill he got onto one knee and sweetly proposed. Right after I said yes his little half brother and sister who were anxiously waiting at the bottom on the hill piled on us yelling “Yay! We have a new sister!!!!”. It was perfect, romantic, and totally adorable. It was also amazing that his Dad and Step-mom got every second of the proposal in video and pictures, which I watch all the time tearing up just as I did that amazing February morning.
Favorite Memory? Thats a tough one! I have so many! I’d have to say firing the Boston Yacht Club cannon at sunset over the Marblehead Harbor with everyone we love watching from the yacht club deck was my favorite part of the day. Every sunset the yacht clubs around Marblehead Harbor fire off their cannons in a particular order. After the cannon is fired, everyone at the yacht club stands in respectful silence as the flags are being lowered. On our wedding day, not only did we have the honor of firing the sunset cannon, but we also were able to watch our own flag being lowered -Tucker’s aunt made us our own T and K flag for the occasion! It was amazing to see everyone we love standing on the deck of the Boston Yacht Club cheering us on and also to see the Hannah Glover Boat brightly lit up for our after party, in the distance sailing towards us.
Anything else you want to share? We packed in so much to one day and enjoyed every minute of it! I loved our band, Search Party, that started the dancing at cocktail hour and kept everyone on their feet until the reception ended. I also loved the rose petals tossing, sparkler send off, and continuing the dancing at the after party on the Hannah Glover cruising boat. I had the absolute BEST day and night of my life. We loved every second of our wedding.
Advice? Enjoy every moment. Make it last as long as you can! Having a rehearsal dinner, after party, and brunch the next morning really maximized the time that I could see all of my friends and family that had traveled so far to be there. Being a teacher I planned out every moment of the ‘wedding week’ which included a weekend at Martha’s Vineyard with our bridal party and friends, nights out in Marblehead, salon pampering, golfing, rehearsal dinner where all guests were invited, ceremony at a beautiful colonial church, reception at the yacht club with a fantastic band, after party sail on the Hannah Glover, and after- after party in town. We really kept the party going and the drinks flowing! It took a long time to plan every detail of the week, but once it started I was able to relax and really enjoy every moment.
