BEAVER Galleries have an exhibition of work by the late Andrew Sayers, comprising a series of paintings distilled from notes and memories of three decades living and working in the capital, as well as time spent on the south coast of NSW.

IN a second exhibition, there are watercolours, prints and small objects by cartoonist/artist Judy Horacek, inspired by her love of old maps, travel, boats and flying. At the galleries, 81 Denison St, Deakin, Both shows run at Beaver, Tue to Fri 10am-5pm, Sat and Sun 9am-5pm, until November 29.

“BIRTH of the Cool” is a great name for an exhibition. A selection of major works by David Aspden, Sydney Ball, Michael Johnson and Dick Watkins, it surveys the decade between 1963 and 1973, a golden era of Australian art once praised as the first genuine avant-garde to appear in Australia since the Heidelberg School in the 1880s. It’s curated by Terence Maloon, director of the ANU Drill Hall Gallery, where the show runs 12 – 5pm Wednesday to Sunday Nov 6-Dec 13. At 12 noon this Friday, November 6, artists and special guests will be remembering the 1960s all welcome.
