Fall means back to school for kids, and hopefully an opportunity for mom to finally find a little time for herself. You want to make the most of those precious minutes! Here is a quick, effective workout to achieve flat abs fast, and it only takes ten minutes a day. Sound too good to be true? Medical researchers at Weill Cornell recently published a study in the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology that proves these revolutionary exercises really work to banish the “mommy pooch,” no matter how long ago you had kids. The key lies in how you breathe as you correctly activate the deep core muscles.

Most pregnancies result in some degree of abdominal separation, a condition known as diastasis recti. This happens when the rectus abdominis – the 6-pack muscles –spread sideways and separate along the midline to make room for the growing baby. In addition to the aesthetic annoyance of a lingering pooch (one that persists long after losing the baby weight), separated abdominals can leave you with back pain and pelvic floor weakness. Until recently, many assumed the only solution was surgery. But science now confirms what I’ve seen over and over with my clients: very specific core exercises can fully resolve “mommy pooch” in less than 12 weeks.

The non-invasive tummy tuck

The foundational exercise in curing diastasis recti is something I call core compressions. These can be performed while seated or standing. Begin by lengthening the spine so you are sitting or standing tall. Draw your abs tight to the spine as you exhale. Then repeatedly pulse your belly even tighter to the spine. Exhale with each squeeze. Start with 5 minutes per day and gradually work up to 10 minutes a day. If you’re really feeling ambitious, incorporate core compressions into planks or side planks. Cardinal rule: never bulge the abs forward! For more exercises and tips visit http://www.thediamethod.com

Perfect for busy moms

The variety of ways you can incorporate these powerful exercises into your daily routine is limitless. Here are some of my favorites:

While commuting

In the shower (often a mom’s only time to herself!)

During nap time

While pumping or feeding a baby

First thing in the morning

Last thing before going to bed

Find a routine that works for you, and stick with it. Soon you’ll slide confidently into your skinny jeans and toss those tired “mommy jeans” for good!
