New - Staff Roster for the Carnival of Nations
The Carnival of Nations is nearly here!  Thank you to each of the volunteers.

You can access all the information you need for your area of responsibility at the Carnival of Nations in this shared document.

New - TK Gains MYP Authorisation!
Last Monday, 4 February, we received the following message from the International BaccalaureateOrganization (IBO):

"Congratulations on having become an IB World School offering the Middle Years Programme."

Those are words that our TK community have been working to earn for the last four years. We are very excited that this has now come to pass. I want to take this opportunity to congratulate Mr. Lennan MacDonald, our MYP Coordinator, and the MYP team of teachers for the effort they have put in to accomplish this.

We are now recognised as an IB World School offering both the PYP and MYP Programmes. Yahoo!

New - Staff Dress Code Policy
Dear Colleagues:

Have you ever wondered what is involved in writing policy? Want to have some input into the revision of our Staff Dress Code Policy? SAT have written a new introduction/rationale for our Dress Code Policy, and we would love to have staff input into how we can best phrase the specifics of our dress code. If you are interested in one meeting (yes, only one) to offer your thoughts on this topic, please send me an email to that effect to:

glenn.odland@cis.edu.sg.

First come, first in...until we have achieved divisional representation and gender balance...so hurry! These spots will go fast.

Cheers,

Glenn

New - CIS Kindness Day
CIS Kindness Day is tommorow 14 February 2013!

Please note the following details regarding the celebration of Kindness Day here at CIS.

As part of the global anti-bullying programme, students will receive pink bracelets. Students can also wear pink clothing or pink accessories during the day. However, the dress code for students is that they must choose between wearing pink or the usual CIS school uniform. No other colours allowed. All clothing must, however, be in line with the dress code guidelines and requirements of the school and appropriate to the activities the students engage in. No short shorts, strapless or spaghetti tops.

It would be great if you could make some time to do some activities on this day to reinforce Kindness Day - the opposite of bullying.

Possible activities include:

The students take a piece of paper and crumple it up, stamp on it and really mess it up but do not rip it. Then they unfold the paper, smooth it out and look at how scarred and dirty it is. Tell it they’re sorry. Now even though they said (...) they were sorry and tried to fix the paper, point out all the scars they left behind. And that those scars will never go away no matter how hard they tried to fix it. That is what happens when a child bully’s another child, they may say they’re sorry but the scars are there forever.

Chalk Talk about how students can be kind to others in the school, at home or in the community

New - CIS Kindness Day - LKS
Serena Sharrock has organized some grade 4/5 students to sing in the atrium at 9:00 and 9:15 on Thursday 14th February. They will be singing a song called "Don't Laugh At Me" by Mark Willis. It will last about 5 minutes. It would be great if you could come along and watch. A Google Doc will be sent out for you to sign up your class, as there is a limit to how many students can watch at any one time.

Elementary School pupils can watch from the 1st floor

Middle school pupils can watch from the 2nd floor

High School pupils can watch from the 3rd floor.

Can you make sure your class is respectful of others watching - remember it is Kindness Day!

Thanks,

Donna Kerr

Lakeside - NW 416

Friendly Reminder - Film/Photo Requests by Communications
There have been many fantastic events happening at CIS lately and the Communications Department is glad to assist staff in these events with photo/video coverage. However, please be reminded that requests are subject to the availability of staff and equipment, and need to be e-mailed at least 3 days in advance to the e-mail listed below.

Thanks for your help!

Film/photo coverage requests can be sent to Attn: Lisa Leland at communications@cis.edu.sg.

Appointment of Summer School Principals
Every year CIS runs a summer school programme on each campus. This programme requires careful planning and considerable collaboration on the part of our Admissions, Marketing and Academic departments. Leadership on the academic side is provided by teachers who are appointed as Summer School Principals. Our past practice has been to offer the first right of refusal to the incumbent principals from the year before. If they decline, or have moved from CIS, then we open it up for any interested applicants.

This year our incumbents from last year have agreed to serve in the same roles again this summer, and we have enthusiastically endorsed them to do so.

As such, Cherie Boltong will be the TK SS Principal, and Nathan Calvert and Darcy George will share the position of Lakeside SS Principal. Please join me in congratulating Cherie, Nathan and Darcy.

You will shortly be hearing from them about opportunities to be involved as summer school teachers.

Cheers,

Glenn,
Ed.D.Head of School

Annual Staff Satisfaction Survey Still Open
The annual staff satisfaction survey is still open. We do ask that all staff complete the survey as your feedback is crucial in our ongoing improvement plans.

EdTech News

EdTech Resources
All IB teams, Grade Level Coordinators, Leads etc:

Mike is prepared to present to any team interested on topics mentioned in his presentation to staff. What is the SAMR model of integration? What are the ISTE standards? What is EdTech? Where are we going with all of this?

Please contact Mike directly to book a time and place. New resources are added weekly to the EdTech tab in the portal.

This week an excellent iPad discovery card was added to the iPad folder.

Do you regularly use your iPads for your classroom?  To help you make the most of the technology CIS offers its students, please have a look through this Quick Reference Guide for iPads.

IT Help Desk procedures for LKS and TK have been added, Please find them in the portal (see image below):

EdTech Help Desk Services
I attended the Cisco Next Generation Workplace panel discussion this week sponsored by the American Chamber of Commerce Singapore. Hers is a short summary from the Twitter feed (#nextgenworkplace) of how our current students will interact with a work environment in the very near future.

"No desks or office for CEO of Cisco in new office"

"Some companies are innovating their way to zero emails through social media networks"

"Rethinking the work-space - creating more efficient teams and more productive employees"

"Better collaboration equals better business - driving productivity to impact the bottom line"

"The work-space evolution - is the PC hindering productivity and efficiency?"

"Culture and co-creation are key in the Next Workplace"

"Technology and the Next Generation Workplace is not limited to high-tech companies; non-tech companies can benefit as well."

Take some time to visit this Twitter feed to review more interesting comments about the future of the work place:

#nextgenworkplace

Please refer to the EdTech/IT tab in the faculty portal for the new Help Desk services offered at both LKS and TK, how to access support, who to ask help from and who to contact for feedback.

Watch out for announcements regarding presentations by Mike concerning details on topics important to EdTech @ CIS. These topics include:

What is the SAMR model of Integration?

Why is CIS adopting it?

What are the I.S.T.E. standards for Admin/Teachers and Students?

Why is CIS adopting them?

Also follow me on Twitter @cisedtech or contribute valuable EdTech info to the CIS hashtag #cisedtech.

Successful Terry Fox Run at LKS!

Last week's Terry Fox Run at Lakeside was a fantastic community event with hundreds of students and teachers turning out to raise money for cancer research.  Whether it was the ECE classes running around cones on the elevated soccer pitch or high schoolers navigating the course through the bus bay and the drive way, smiles were seen all around and laughter echoing through the campus.

Thank you to all those who organised the event!
