New Carnival of Nations Art Fair

This year at our CIS Carnival Of Nations, a new and spectacular student-led Art Fair will be held! Many of the works of our High School student community will be displayed this Saturday throughout the day, and many of the works are to be auctioned at our Silent Auction! The Art Fair will be held in the bus bay and the winners of the silent auction will be announced by the end of the day! A preview of the art can be found here.

Read Around the World - A Diversity Showcase

A video that sees CIS students reading around the world has been prepared in honour of UN week celebrations. Thank you to Mr. Ben Grundy for putting this video together.

UN Week Song 2013

One of our Grade 12 students, Tanya Phillips, has composed this song to commemorate UN week this year. Tanya had this to say about the piece:

"The community at CIS has always felt like a family to me, warm, welcoming and accepting. As someone who is creative, I wanted to express my gratitude, but also my perspective of our close knit community in the best way I know how.

For me, this song is really about how, despite all our different cultures and backgrounds, we share so much and fit so well together - hence the name of the song Puzzle Piece. The song  is an expression of how each one of us in this school brings something unique and important to the table - something I truly believe."

Thank you to Tanya (composer and vocalist) and fellow student performers, Kevin Mawardi (Drums), and Aaron Panganiban (Guitar) for creating this musical masterpiece. Please enjoy the music.

New Extra Curricular Activities (ECA) Registration
System Opens at 7:00am on Monday, 18 February 2013

The registration system for ECAs opens at 7:00am on Monday, 18 February 2013 and can be accessed at this page on the school website. Registration is available on a first-come, first served basis.

Please note that you need to create an account of your choosing to register for ECAs. This means that you will use your email address and determine a password of your choice to use the registration system - you do not use the details used in Block 2 registration or your parent portal details.

Key Dates: ECA Block 3

ECAs - Block 3 Begins: the week of 11 March

ECAs - Block 3 Ends: the week of 13 May

Please note: Block 3 ECAs will not take place over the March/April Break, Staff PD Days or on non-school days.

ECA Costs:

If you have registered for any External ECAs with a cost, you must first fully pay for the ECA before your child will be allowed to participate. The deadline to pay for Block 3 External ECAs is 4 March, 2013.

Please note that if payment is not received by all parents, ECAs may be cancelled.

What ECAs are on Offer?

The listing of ECAs was sent to all parents in the February 8 WAG and can be viewed on this page under "What ECAs are on Offer".

In Elementary School only, Internal ECA registration is capped to 2 ECAs per student. No restrictions are set for Middle or High School or for External ECAs. Once ECAs begin, students will not be allowed to switch or change ECAs.

Full details regarding ECAs, External ECAs, ECA bussing, payment terms and the ECA refund policy can be viewed on the school website.

New Academic Updates

New Academic Appeal & Academic Honesty Policy Changes

Please note that the following policies have been amended and approved: Academic Appeal Policy (amended to apply to all students); and the Academic Honesty Policy (amended to apply to students in Grades 4 and up).

Additional Language Selection
As many of you know, students in Grades 1 to Grade 3 will select one Additional Language to study next year, rather than two. This has prompted many questions about the Additional Languages programme in general, so we have created a Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) page for parents. It can be accessed here. If you have additional questions, please send them to ann.peterson@cis.edu.sg with "Languages" in the subject line.

Assessment in the Primary Years Programme

Scholarships - Now Open
IB Diploma Programme Scholarships are now open for application. Students with a passion to succeed and a desire to embrace a 21st century education are invited to apply.

Scholarship application forms are available here. Students must be entering Grade 11 in August 2013. Applications close 28 February, 2013.

Food Festival - Important Information

The renowned CIS Food Festival is almost here. The Food Festival is truly a multi-cultural experience where all students can sample dishes from all around the world. Here is some important information for all parents to know before the festival:

Containers

Please ensure that your child brings a food container, with a lid, on Wednesday, 20 February 2013. As your child has a set time at the Food Festival, this will allow your child to take a tasty treat from one table and move on to the other so that they can enjoy all their delicious food later.

Donations

As a part of the High School Community's Outreach activities, donations can be made at the Food Festival via donation boxes located in the venue itself or can be given to your child's Teacher/Advisor. We are recommending a donation of $2.00 per student.

Food Festival Location

The Food Festival will be located in the bus bay.

For parents who are contributing food but cannot attend the Food Festival, you can deliver your food contributions the following ways:

• On Wednesday morning, students can bring the food donation on the bus and when alighting at school, hand the food to one of the staff or High School volunteers who will be on standby.

• For students who are dropped off in the Atrium and / or at the Elementary Drop-off area, staff and High School volunteers will be located at both locations to assist with food collection.

Food being dropped off should be in disposable containers, labelled with the name of the country the dish is from, name of the dish and ingredient list (especially if contains eggs or nuts). Food should be in bite sized pieces.

World Education Games 2013

The countdown to the 2013 World Education Games (formerly known as World Math Day) has begun! The World Education Games occurs over three days:

World Literacy Day - 5 March 2013

World Math Day - 6 March 2013

World Science Day - 7 March 2013

The World Education Games is an annual global online challenge to get all students (4-18 years of age) excited about learning, and to give the top students in all schools an opportunity to see how they measure up against the best in the world. Last year, over 5 million students were a part of what is now the world's largest online education event.

Students in Grades 3-6 at both Lakeside and TK campuses can go to www.worldeducationgames.com and sign in with their Mathletics user details. For all other students head to www.worldeducationgames.com and register for a free account. The games are open for practice from now until the event days. If you have an iPad or Samsung Galaxy tablet, you can also visit your app store to download the free app.

French Lessons at Lakeside

LKS is pleased to announce a new French language provider, French Toast, for its after school languages programme. French Lessons will begin this month.

French Toast will begin providing teachers for French lessons the week beginning Monday, 18 February. Lessons will run from 3:30pm to 4:30pm on Mondays, Wednesdays, and/or Fridays and will continue until the last week of classes in June. This means that the programme will run outside of Block 3 ECA dates. Lessons are open to students in SK to Grade 12, with students being grouped according to age and ability. A minimum of three students is required to hold a class. If you are interested in joining, please fill out this form. The school will contact you prior to the 18 February to confirm whether there is sufficient enrollment. The cost of each session is $25.00, with an additional, once per year of $50 for resources. The lessons fee is to be paid in 10-class increments, directly to CIS.

About French Toast (www.frenchtoast.sg)

As a constant effort to widen our services, we are now offering French classes for kids in Singapore, from toddlers to teenagers. We are pleased to begin this partnership with the Canadian International School students from SK to Grade 12.

Younger Learners

Based on story telling, games and interactive activities, these lessons will help your children learn and stay in touch with French while having fun.

8 to 18 year-olds

The lessons are constructed with stories and characters related to the 8-18 year old's centre of interest (school, friends, leisure). Learning is progressive, following the children's rhythm and pace. The idea is to encourage the students to produce concrete, real work so that they can realise the progress they have made and apply everything they have learnt in a constructive and positive environment.

Rehearsals for the High School musical Working are already in full swing. From what we have seen so far, this looks like an event not to be missed, so mark your calendar and save the date.

Plot Summary:

Written in 1975 by Stephen Schwartz (Pippin, Wicked) with the help of an all-star creative team that includes James Taylor and others, Working is a piece derived from interviews conducted by radio-show icon Studs Terkel in late 1960's. It focuses on the working lives of everyday Americans in Chicago, New York, and other industrial cities. Unlike most musicals, Working does not follow a particular story line with protagonists and antagonists. Instead, this musical is like a vignette of moments in the life of various working class heroes: A fireman tells of his ordeals saving people from their burning homes; an unhappy office worker speaks of her complacency dealing with an overbearing boss and a job that doesn't excite her. We meet house wives, iron workers, politicians, and waitresses and catch glimpses into their daily lives, their dreams, ambitions, failures, and successes.

Red Dot Book Awards
Red Dot reading is well under way at both CIS campuses, as well as many other international schools across Singapore. The Red Dot Book Award, an initiative of the International School Teacher Librarian Network, is a Singapore Children's Choice book award. An award is given to the winner in each of four categories: Early Readers, Younger Readers, Older Readers and Mature Readers. Voting will take place in the week of 6 - 13 March. Until then the books are available in the school libraries, as well as local book stores. Teachers and librarians will be reading the Early Reader books with their students so everyone's vote will count!  We welcome and encourage you to participate by asking your students about the Red Dot books they have read and visiting the Red Dot website to check out the links to each category, and the added information available there.

Mac Training for Parents - New Dates
Classes filling up fast so sign up NOW!

Connie Gleeson, a CIS parent and Apple Certified Support Professional, will be offering a basic two-day course for beginner to intermediate users (from 1:00pm to 3:00pm) on the following dates at Lakeside:

Wednesday, 6 March and Thursday, 7 March

The cost is $125 per person. Bring your own fully charged Mac Laptops and power cords. Bring iPhones and iPads if you own them as well.

Students Leaving Campus - Security Protocols
Parents who need to collect their child(ren) during the school day are asked to go to their child(ren)'s divisional office to get a check out slip signed. This signed form needs to be shown to the guards before the student may leave the campus. If you're collecting your child as a result of sickness (and a phone call from the Nurse), the sign out sheet will be issued.
