School Wide News

New IB Self Study and WASC Accreditation

An essential component of the IB Evaluation Cycle is the completion of the Self-Study. The Self-Study requires schools to assess its own implementation of the IB Standards and Practices and to identify major achievements and practices that need further development. In November 2013, all three of our IB Lakeside programmes, the PYP, MYP, and DP, will have an Evaluation Visit, during which the evaluators will take a close look at the school's Self-Study process and results. In addition, the High School will undergo an accreditation visit by WASC (Western Association of Schools and Colleges), during which the site visitors will analyse the school's Self-Study from the High School perspective (Grades 9 to 12). Parent input during the Self-Study process is highly valued by the school, and parents are encouraged to watch for opportunities to volunteer in this process.

PTA News - Holiday Teacher and Staff Appreciation Event
As the first part of the school year draws to a close, the PTA is planning to host a Holiday Teacher and Staff Appreciation event as a way of saying thanks for all their dedication and hard work over the recent months. The event will be a pancake breakfast with coffee supplied by wonderful local barista, Huggs Coffee, for the Teachers followed by a morning break with fresh baking and fruit for the Support Staff.

The event is scheduled for Friday, 7 December 2012 beginning at 7.30am in the atrium. To make this plan a success we will be looking for help and contributions from our parent community. We would appreciate help with the following:

Volunteers - For set up, flipping pancakes, serving and clean up.

Teacher Breakfast -  PTA will supply and be cooking pancakes on site. If parents could contribute cooked bacon/sausages, maple syrup, fruit platters.

Support Staff Break - Contributions of savoury or sweet baked goods such as scones, muffins, croissants, cookies and fresh fruit platters.

Please note the early start to the breakfast when considering how you would like to contribute. Baking for the support staff event may be dropped off during the afternoon of the Thursday, 6 December. Also and ideally please send your contributions in containers that do not need to be returned, with the holidays close on the heels of this event it is difficult to ensure their safe return

If you would like to find out more and help out, or are able to donate some of these items, please contact the PTA at lkspta@cis.edu.sg. Thank you in advance for your help in showing our teachers and staff how greatly we appreciate all they do.

Happy Holidays!

Elementary School

From Elementary School Principal, Rob Kiddell
Dear Parents,

The number of books will grow continually, and one can predict that a time will come when it will be almost as difficult to learn anything from books as from the direct study of the whole universe. It will be almost as convenient to search for some bit of truth concealed in nature as it will be to find it hidden away in an immense multitude of bound volumes. Denis Diderot (1700s)

This week we had four assemblies, ranging from a musical about molecules through to a show about how it is our hands that shape the world. During these performances, over 160 different children were on stage showing their wares. Some displayed the skill of a narrator, while others sang and still others showed pieces of their art work. Most impressive was their calm and confident nature as they used the microphone, which allowed them to be heard throughout the theatre. My thanks to all the student performers and to the teachers who took the time and energy to prepare their public speaking roles. Truly our assemblies reflect the great things that go on within our classrooms.

After the assemblies, I had the opportunity to meet with a few parents and talk about the school. While everyone loved the assemblies, a few questions arose including: "What is the value of homework for young students?" and "With students choosing one language beginning in Grade 1 next year, how do I ensure that they are exposed to other languages?". The opportunity to engage with parents and glean their perspective, is one I relish, and helps inform our perspectives on your child's education. For those of you who were unable to attend, we are hoping that you will attend our assemblies in December. We are sure that our students will make all of you feel proud of our school as they sing, act and perform on stage.

Have a great weekend.

Yours sincerely,

Rob Kiddell
Elementary School Principal

New The Reindeer Games - Grade 3 Musical
The Grade 3 classes will be performing a musical called "The Reindeer Games" on Thursday, 13 December at 9.00am in the David Foster Theatre.

Imagine what fun the Reindeer, Elves, and the rest of the folks at the North Pole have as The Reindeer Games take place each year. There will be singing, dancing, acting and of course, Santa Claus. But, the reindeer learn a valuable lesson and realize that the games aren't all about winning and losing. As the song states, "For each of us can do our part, all we need to do is share."

All friends and parents are invited to attend the performance. Since the message is one of giving, we ask that parents please bring a non-perishable food item for the Food Drive. Boxes will be located outside the theatre doors and this food will be given to help the needy in the community.

Thanks for your support!

Music Teacher

Thank you to the parents who were able to join us for the Curriculum Information coffee meeting on Physical Education. It was a very informative meeting and a sincere thank you to Mr. Neil Griffiths, a member of the Middle School Physical Education team, for sharing the key features of our programme with parents.

During his presentation, Neil referenced the research of Stanford University psychologist, Dr. Carol Dweck, who has researched factors that determine achievement and success. Dr. Dweck is also the author of 'Mindset: The New Psychology of Success'. The NBC discussion featuring Carol Dweck: 'True Grit, Can You Teach Children Character', that was mentioned during the meeting can be viewedhere.

Our MYP / DP High School exams will take place on 11-14 December according to this schedule. All exams take place in the WW 5th floor pod classrooms. I ask parents to review with students theHigh School Exam Protocol that will be in place for these exam days; this has also been shared with students through our "FYI" student announcement page. OSSD students will take their exams during the week of 21 January and their classes will continue as usual during the December exams. Please avoid any travel plans that would necessitate students leaving before the end of our exam period, as we are not able to offer alternative times or settings for exams.

High School Music Concert - Monday, 3 December
CIS friends, families and community: Please plan to join us for a wonderful night of international music and jazz as we present the CIS High School Music Programme's December Concert. This concert will feature the debut of our CIS HS Wind Ensemble and our CIS Jazz Ensemble under the direction of Erik Riggs. The concert will feature performers from Grades 9-12 sharing large ensemble and solo work from around the globe.

Visual Art Exhibition
Before and after music night the parents are invited to view and appreciate the fine artwork that has been produced here at CIS. Examples of selected works can be viewed outside of the David Foster Theatre and on the 5th floor gallery (near the High School office). Works featured range in media and theme and span from Grade 9 through Grade 12. Please enjoy the fine talents on display.

Coffee Talk
For those of you who attended our Coffee Talk two weeks ago, we had a great time. We had our usual discussion of issues and topics at our school, and then set out to observe a High School class. If you've ever wondered what life at High School is all about at CIS, this was a great experience as parents got to sit in on Ms. Nizam's DP Biology class. Our next coffee talk is scheduled for 9.30am on Wednesday, 9 January 2013, and then at 10.30am we'll set out to observe another class.

Sincerely,

Dr. David Ansbacher
