W
510 – The 510 is the most popular ecig battery threading, sometimes called a male thread. It was developed by JoyE and almost overnight became the industry standard.
901 – This is an atomizer with a female thread and it isn’t compatible with the 510 threading.
2-Piece – An electronic cigarette designed with two components: a battery and a cartomizer. This is the most popular design for cig-a-like devices.
3-Piece – An electronic cigarette designed with three components: a battery, an atomizer, and a cartridge.
Adapter – A device with dual threading that allows vapers to use a battery with a different style atomizer, cartomizer, or clearomizer. This allows people to mix and match their components. For instance, some might use an adapter to connect a 901 atomizer to a 510 battery.
APV – This is an Advanced Personal Vaporizer and typically features variable voltage and variable wattage settings with a larger battery than standard ecig devices.
American Wire Gauge (AWG) – This is the measurement used in the United States to denote the diameter and resistance of the electric wires found in atomizer coils.
Amperage – Amperage (or amps) is the flow of electricity along a circuit.
Analog Cigarette – A traditional, tobacco cigarette
Atomizer – Sometimes called an Atty, the atomizer contains the heating coil that connects to the battery and carries the power from the battery to heat up the e-liquid and create vapor.
Automatic – An automatic ecig activates when the user inhales. It does not have a button to activate the battery and instead relies on a built in sensor to activate the atomizer.
Automatic Shutoff – This is a safety feature that will automatically cause a battery to stop firing after a preprogrammed amount of time to prevent over heating. This is a common feature and is typically set to 10 seconds.
Battery – The battery is the electronic component of an ecig. It provides the power to heat up the e-liquid and turn it into vapor.
Blanks – Cartomizers that contain dry filler but no e-liquid. The user adds their own e-liquid prior to vaping.
Box Mod – An advanced personal vaporizer designed in a box shape.
Car Adapter – A device that allows vapers to charge the ecig battery in the car through a USB connection.
Cartridge – The part of an ecig that holds e-liquid and filler material. It screws onto the atomizer.
Cartomizer – A combination of an atomizer and a cartridge designed for two-piece electronic cigarettes. These are designed to be used once and then thrown away rather than refilling after each use.
CASAA – The Consumer Advocacy for Smoke-Free Alternatives Association is a non-profit organization that fights for ecig rights and fair regulation.
Cig-a-like – An electronic cigarette designed to mimic the look of a tobacco cigarette. It is small and lightweight and typically serves as an entry point for most smokers when they want to try vaping.
Charger – The device used to recharge an ecig battery.
Clearomizer – A version of the cartomizer that is transparent so the user can easily see how much e-liquid is inside.
Cloud – The vapor that is exhaled when using an e-cigarette.
Coil – The wire inside of an electronic cigarette that creates an electrical circuit and carries battery power to heat up the e-liquid.
Custom Mods – Advanced personal vaporizers that are handmade from components that were not originally designed for vaping.
Dewick – The act of removing the wick from an ecig atomizer.
Disposable Ecig – An electronic cigarette that comes in one piece and is designed for short-term use. It cannot be recharged or refilled and must be thrown away the vaper uses all the e-liquid or depletes the battery charge.
Doubler – A term used to describe e-liquids with a double portion of flavorings.
Draw – The act of inhaling from an ecig.
Dripping – The act of dripping e-liquid directly into the atomizer instead of using a cartridge of tank.
Drip Kit – A starter kit designed for vapers who want to drip e-liquids rather than using a tank. It typically includes a battery, atomizer chamber, and a drip tip.
Drip Shield – A round tube that covers the atomizer to prevent leaking.
Drip Tip – An ecig mouthpiece designed with an opening where the user can directly drip e-liquid into the atomizer without taking off the tip.
Dry Burn – When you fire an atomizer on a battery without any e-liquid. This causes the coils to heat up and glow and burns off any impurities or build up.
Ecig Accessories – Extra pieces to add to your ecig for more customization such as storage cases, charges, and lanyards.
Ego – An electronic cigarette design with 510 threads and larger batteries. Most ego styles include a tank to hold e-liquid rather than a cartomizer.
E-juice – Another term for e-liquid.
Electronic Cigar – An ecig designed to mimic the size, shape, and overall experience of a traditional cigar.
Electronic Cigarette Starter Kit – A prepackaged kit that includes all the components needed to begin vaping. These kits usually include a battery, cartomizers or clearomizers, and a charger.
E-liquid – The solution used in ecigs to produce vapor. It is made from a base of either propylene glycol or vegetable glycerin, with added nicotine and flavorings.
Filler – The absorbant material inside of an ecig cartridge.
Flooding – A term used to describe the event when you put too much eliquid into an atomizer and it gurgles or overflows.
Glassomizer – A clearomizer made from glass instead of plastic.
Hit – The experience of inhaling vapor from an electronic cigarette.
HV – A term for devices that operate a voltage higher than 3.7.
Juice – Another term used to describe e-liquid.
Knuckle Head – A drip tip that is adjustable so the vaper can set it at the desired angle for more comfortable use.
LED – The type of light found on the tip of most cig-a-like models that lights up when the user inhales. It gives the impression that the vaper is actually using a cigarette and it sometimes changes colors or blinks to signify a need to recharge the battery.
Low Resistance – A type of atomizer with a lower Ohm rating than typical ecigs. Lower ohms typically result in the ecig heating up faster and producing vapor quickly.
mAh – Milliampere-hour, the standard unit of measurement for a battery.
Manual – An ecig that has a button, which the user must press to activate the heating element inside.
Manual Shut Off – An ecig that requires the user to press a button in order to turn the battery off.
Mechanical Mod – An ecig with no electronics or wiring. It only has a metal tube with a mechanical switch that holds a battery and a connector to the top.
Microprocessor – A component in the ecig battery that controls the temperature and the LED light indicator.
MG – Milligrams; a unit of measurement to describe the nicotine strength in an e-liquid.
Micro Coil – A wire coil that is wrapped tightly so the loops are all touching.
Mod – A term for a vaping device that has been modified in some way. It is commonly used to refer to an advanced electronic cigarette.
Mouthpiece – The tip of the ecig where a vaper puts their mouth in order to inhale.
Nicotine – The chemical substance found in e-liquids that is also used in traditional tobacco cigarettes. It comes in varied strengths and has a similar effect on the body as caffeine.
Ohm – The standard measurement of electrical resistance.
Passthrough – An ecig that plugs directly into an USB port to charge while it is in use.
PG – Propylene Glycol, often called PG, is a common ingredient in e-liquid. It is also found in many foods and cosmetics.
Pen Style – An electronic cigarette design that looks similar to a ball point pen.
Personal Charging Case – A case that allows ecig batteries to charge in storage.
Personal Vaporizer – Another term to describe the ecig, but typically used to described more advanced electronic cigarettes.
Resistance – The measurement of ohms that helps a vaper determine the appropriate amount of voltage needed. Typically ecigs come in low or standard resistance options.
Sensor – The component inside of an automatic ecig that detects when the user inhales and activates the device.
Smokeless Cigarette – Another name for the e-cig, commonly used to point out that ecigs actually do not product smoke at all, but only emit an odorless vapor that quickly disappears.
Starter Kit – A prepackaged kit with all the components needed for an electronic cigarette. The kit typically includes a battery, cartomizers, and a charger.
Steeping – The act of letting e-liquid sit out exposed to room air in order to strengthen the flavor.
Sub-Ohming – The practice of increasing amp capacity on a battery and reducing the ohms of the coil to produce larger amounts of vapor.
Tank – A cartridge designed to hold e-liquid. It often has a clear window on the side so the user can see the level of e-liquid inside.
Throat Hit – The feeling in your throat when you inhale ecig vapor.
Topper – A small piece that fits on top of the ecig.
Topping Off – Adding a small amount of e-liquid to the tank or cartomizer.
USB Charger – A device that charges the ecig battery by connecting it to a USB port on the computer.
Vape – The act of using an electronic cigarette
Vaper – A person that uses ecigs.
Vapor – The fog that ecig users exhale that looks similar to smoke.
Vegetable Glycerin – A common ingredient used in many e-liquids and the preferred option for people who have an allergy or sensitivity to Propylene Glycol.
Voltage – The amount of potential energy that pairs with resistance to create wattage.
Variable Voltage – An advanced personal vaporizer that allows the user to control the level of power from the ecig to manipulate vapor output.
VV Mod – Another term used to describe variable voltage vaping devices.
Watt – The measurement of heat used to vaporize e-liquid in the atomizer.
Wick – Made from silica, mesh, fiberglass, cotton, or ceramic, the wick delivers e-liquid to the coil in the atomizer.
