Is there a best method to learn your kid to read? If you believe the NRP(National Reading Panel, “teaching children to manipulate phonemes in words was highly effective under a variety of teaching conditions with a variety of learners across a range of grade and age levels and that teaching phonemic awareness to children significantly improves their reading more than instruction that lacks any attention to Phonemic Awareness.” [1] This report was supplied by the NRP in their report called “TEACHING CHILDREN TO READ: An Evidence-Based Assessment of the Scientific Research Literature on Reading and Its Implications for Reading Instruction.”

The report was based around Phonemic Awareness,Phonemic Awareness instruction was selected} for review by the NRP in their report because other studies have concluded that phonemic awareness and letter knowledge as two of the best determining factors of how well your child will learn to read in their first couple of years of starting school. There is evidence to indicate that phonemic awareness instructions are an important part in helping kids develop reading skills. Click Here! to learn more.

One study discussed the likely presence of phonemic awareness in American children aged 6 to 7 years that were unable to read when first starting school. This case study found that many childs had not one correct response in their test of a simple vowel substitution job. Strangely though, some kids who displayed high phonemic awareness scored close to perfect on this same test.

The study further highlighted that “there was a specific predictive relationship between initial phonemic awareness differences and success in learning to read and to spell.” Even more importantly, the study showed that it was phonemic awareness abilities, and not Intelligence Quota(IQ), that predicted the accuracy of reading and spelling at the end of grade one. Kids with high phonemic awareness at the beginning of grade one had above average reading and spelling achievements at the end of grade one, when compared to other kids with low phonemic awareness who had difficulties understanding to read and spell.
