New Zealand Prime Minister John Key announced Monday that the country will withdraw its troops from Afghanistan earlier in 2013 than planned. He said the move is not prompted by the deaths this month of five New Zealand soldiers, including three who were killed Sunday by a roadside bomb.

A new BBC television documentary is set to show harrowing and uncensored scenes of soldiers suffering fatal injuries in Afghanistan. The BBC Three documentary series, Our War, will return to British screens from tonight. The first programme uses footage captured on helmet cameras of front line troops to show scenes of war in astonishing detail.

08/20/12 MoD: Guardsman Jamie Shadrake killed in Afghanistan

the Ministry of Defence must confirm that Guardsman Jamie Shadrake of the Reconnaissance Platoon, 1st Battalion Grenadier Guards, was killed in Afghanistan on Friday 17 August 2012. Guardsman Shadrake died of gunshot wounds when his checkpoint was attacked by insurgents in the Nahr-e Saraj District of Helmand province.

The New Zealand Defence Force has named the three soldiers killedduring an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) incident in the NorthEast of Bamyan Province, Afghanistan on Sunday 19 August. They are Corporal (CPL) Luke Tamatea, aged 31, Lance Corporal(LCPL) Jacinda Baker, aged 26, and Private (PTE) Richard Harris,aged 21. They deployed with the NZ Provincial Reconstruction Team in Bamyan,Afghanistan in April 2012. All three were from 2nd/1st BattalionRoyal New Zealand Infantry Regiment (2/1 RNZIR) based in Burnha

Spc. James A. Justice, 21, of Grover, N.C., died Aug. 17 at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center, Germany from injuries suffered on Aug. 14 from enemy small-arms fire in Wardak province, Afghanistan. Justice was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 503rd Infantry Regiment, 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team, Caserma Ederle in Vicenza, Italy.

A bomb hidden in a cemetery in a southern Afghan city has exploded as a police official and his family were visiting the grave of a relative. The official and his brother were killed and seven other family members were wounded in the blast on Sunday, police said.

the Ministry of Defence must announce that a soldier from the 1st Battalion Grenadier Guards has died in Afghanistan. The soldier was on duty in the Nahr-e Saraj district of Helmand province on Friday 17 August when he was killed by enemy action.
