With February famous for Cupid's hits—and misses—we decided to crack the secrets to successful wooing with some words of wisdom from Jeff Lawler, managing partner since the 1990s of Geja's Cafe, one of the city's most romantic restaurants. One thing we learned: The fondue favorite has been the scene of a staggering 4,000-plus proposals since it opened in 1965. 340 W. Armitage Ave., 773.281.9101, www.gejascafe.com

Why do you think Geja’s has such a reputation for romance?

It has grown over our many-year history, and the reputation continues to strengthen over the years. Primarily, it starts with the fondue—fondue dining truly brings people together via dipping of bread into cheese fondue, cooking of meats, seafoods and veggies into a pot of oil and dipping into gourmet sauces and finally the roasting of marshmallows over a flamed pot of chocolate fondue and then more dipping of strawberries, bananas and pound cake. Then there is the old world feel of our atmosphere with the dimly lit dining room, wine bottle-lined walls, curtain booths and the live classical and Flamenco guitarist. The two-hour experience allows our guests to truly lose themselves in their time together.

Valentine’s Day ups the stakes for romance. What does Geja’s do that’s special?

We start by enhancing the dining room atmosphere with red velvet curtains and other decorations that add that special touch to show that Cupid has visited Geja’s. We do special seating times and packages so that all Valentine’s diners know they will have a relaxed and special experience.

What are some of your most memorable proposals you’ve seen at Geja's?

My craziest experience was a gentleman who rushed through the dinner course, then went to the coat room to get a box, and he proposed—with a pair of shoes. Sadly, she declined, and the staff consoled him. Five years later, I met a lady who told me her daughter was proposed to at Geja’s with a pair of shoes. I could not believe it. I asked whatever happened to them; she said they get engaged one year later the traditional way with a ring, got married and have two kids. It brought tears of joy to my eyes.

How have you been involved in proposal plans?

I first ask if they have any ideas. If they don’t, I will ask if they want to get it over with at the start of the evening or wait until the end (the chocolate fondue course). When they want to do it right away, we either create a special dinner menu with the proposal or slip a note into the wine menu.

What would you suggest couples do in Chicago before a romantic dinner?

Before a romantic dinner at Geja’s I like to recommend a couples massage at Lincoln Park Massage Spa. There is nothing better than being ultra-relaxed before dining for two hours. Afterward, Pops for Champagne for a glass of bubbles and their live bands. Very nice finish to the night.

After witnessing so many proposals, what are your tips for success?

It surprises me that some people don't make plans ahead for such a special event in their lives and they end up with a not-so-romantic table or dining experience. Call the restaurant, tell them you want to get engaged there, and we all will roll out the red carpet for you.

What do you consider some hidden dining gems of Chicago?
Tarantino’s on Armitage, Knife & Tine on Fullerton, and the back patio at Rose Angelis on Wrightwood.
