The proposal will preserve a couple more historic buildings
The ambitious plan to completely overhaul the Julia C. Lathrop Homes housing project along the Chicago River near the Roscoe Village and Logan Square neighborhoods has been tweaked yet again. To ensure that historic tax credits from the U.S. National Park Service are received for the project, the developers behind the Lathrop Homes redevelopment have dropped two mid-rise buildings at the project’s eastern edge from the plan, DNAinfo reports. The bKL-designed buildings were originally planned to replace a few existing buildings, including the site’s original welcome center and office.
There’s no word on whether or not the proposal will be reintroduced to the Chicago Plan Commission. Molly Sullivan of the Chicago Housing Authority tells DNAinfo that "everything is on track moving forward." The CHA has set aside $75 million for the redevelopment’s first phase which will focus on the buildings north of Diversey Parkway. In total, the redevelopment will deliver 1,116 housing units and 11 acres of green space to the area.
