Kitchens are the functional heart of a home. Planning the lighting is one of the most important aspects of kitchen design.
Pendant lights are one of the most stylish types of lighting that you can bring to your kitchen. But beyond it aesthetic value, pendant luminaire is a form of task lighting that makes kitchen work more comfortable and safe.
When it comes to choose the right pendant lights in the kitchen, the subject brings many headaches. In today’s post I’m answering some of the most common questions about lighting your kitchen with pendant lights, as well as bringing 10 great examples to get inspired.
Q1 | Where should I place the pendant lights?
Pendant lighting is used in areas where you need direct task lighting, or you need a drop down ambient light from a higher ceiling. In the kitchen, they are also typically placed in those areas where you cannot have high cabinetry with down lighting underneath. These areas are the bench top, kitchen island or breakfast area.
Q2 | How many pendant lights do I need to light my kitchen?
It depends on the length of the surface that you want to light. You will need enough pendants to evenly light the entire surface, with no dark spots or shadows. Even though there isn’t a right number, usually 2 or 3 pendants are enough for small and medium size kitchens. If you need more than that, choose an odd number.
Q3 | How high should the pendant light be hanged?
A recommended height for installing pendant lights over an island is about 170 cm off of the floor. But it will depend on your personal preferences and kitchen design. Generally speaking they will need to be high enough to not get in the way when you are preparing food, block the view or obstruct other kitchen features.
Q4 | What is the optimum size for a kitchen pendant light?
The overall space and the number of pendants that you want to bring into the kitchen will determine their size. For example, a 2,5 metres kitchen benchtop will only fit two drum pendant lights, or three small pendant lights.

Dónde colocar una lámpara colgante
Al contrario de lo que mucha gente piensa, las lámparas colgantes no debería ubicarse en mitad de la cocina, sino sobre áreas de trabajo que requieran mayor iluminación. Dichas áreas suelen ser la encimera, la isla central o el área de desayuno. Habitualmente suelen incorporarse cuando sobre el área de trabajo no puedan ubicarse armarios altos con puntos de luz bajo los mismos.
Cuántas lámparas son suficientes para iluminar mi cocina
Ello depende de las dimensiones del espacio que necesita iluminarse con ellas. Aunque no hay un número concreto, normalmente 2 o 3 lámparas son suficientes para iluminar un área de trabajo en la cocina. Si se necesitan más de 3, números impares siempre quedaran mejor que números pares.
A qué altura se debe situar la lámpara
La altura recomendada para instalar una lámpara colgante es a unos 170 cm del suelo. Pero ello dependerá de tus preferencia personales y del diseño de tu cocina.
Cuál es el tamaño adecuado de una lámpara de cocina
Las dimensiones de la cocina y el número de lámparas que quieras instalarse determinará su tamaño. Por ejemplo, para una encimera de 2,5 metros dos lámparas grandes o tres pequeñas serán suficientes para iluminar el área.
