The Township of Esquimalt unveiled plans and a partner for the Esquimalt Village Project at a council meeting tonight.
It will be built on lands adjacent to the Municipal Hall on Esquimalt Road.
“This is a very big deal,” says Mayor Barb Desjardins.
“We view this project as a catalyst for development in Esquimalt for years to come.”
The concept plan calls for a six-story building to include rental units, as well as commercial space on the ground floor.
Another new structure will house the Esquimalt Branch of the Greater Victoria Public Library.
The centerpiece say those who designed the concept plan is a 17,000 sq.ft. public square.
“The important part here is that it is an open public space in a front and center position on Esquimalt Road,” says Frank D’Ambrosio of D’Ambrosio Architects and Urbanism.
The Township also announced it is teaming up with Aragon Investments Ltd to go ahead with the acquisition and development of the lands beside Municipal Hall.
Mayor Desjardins touted Aragon’s experience with similar projects saying that the company has worked on more than fifty comparable urban developments in B.C., Ontario and California.
“We hope to achieve an aesthetically pleasing project that residents can be proud of, ” says Lenny Moy, President of the Aragon group of companies.
The community will have the opportunity to view and comment on the proposed project design.
If all goes according to plan, construction is expected to begin next year and be completed by 2019.
