With seven months to go before election, the gloves are off

With seven months to go until the provincial election, B.C.’s opposition party leaders took direct aim at the ruling Liberal Party.

NDP Leader John Horgan didn’t hold back in Surrey.

And the Green Party leader took on the government’s dismal environmental record.

As Mary Griffin reports, political watchers say it’s going to be an interesting seven months.

It’s 28 weeks until the provincial election.

Already the race is on.

“If you elect an NDP government is elected will invest 40% into the mayor’s ten year transit plan.”

NDP Leader John Horgan held a campaign-style stump speech in Surrey.

And his target, Premier Christy Clark.

“Transportation and transit is suffering because Christy Clark is not taking action.”

“They do whatever it takes to get to yes.”

Another city, another political leader taking aim at the Liberal party.

“I’m calling on the Minister of Environment, Mary Polak, to resign effective immediately.”

“I think this mean that there are going to be some interesting battlegrounds here on the island and over the next several months and in to that election.”

This political scientist says the Liberals focus on the Island is going to shake things up.

“We’ve got two party leaders on this Island.

We’ve got three seats, incumbents not running.

We’ve got some really interesting races coming up.”

Bring it on, says the NDP Leader.

“There are transportation, education issues, health issues, and the fentanyl issue is exploding on Vancouver Island.

And the Liberals have paid little or no attention to the needs and concerns of my community.”

The Green Party leader says the Liberals can try, but it won’t work.

“They’ll say whatever it takes to try to win votes on Vancouver Island.

But voters are cynical about the B.C. Liberals.

They are cynical because of the track record is such that they say one thing and do another.”

Prince says there are only two Liberal-held ridings on the island, Comox Valley and Parksville Qualicum.

If Christy Clark intends on increasing the party’s hold, it’s going to be a challenge.

“The Premier’s coming into the stronghold of the NPD.

The Island has been pretty orange most of it over past several elections.

If she wants to hold to her majority, she can’t let them grow any.

If she can chip at one or two on the island, so much the better for her fortunes.”

All parties have months to go to convince voters how to cast their ballots.
