This Week in CHCACTivities
What happens now?
That is the question on the minds of many people who care about health care in our communities, our state and across the country. Over the past six years, Republicans in Congress have voted to repeal parts of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) 62 times – their efforts have never gone further because of President Obama’s veto pen.
Now, with both houses of Congress to be controlled by Republicans, and a Republican President-elect – all of whom campaigned on repealing and replacing the ACA – many are, understandably, concerned about the future of this program.
Some difficult scenarios to consider:
– Medicaid as we know it may end. The Medicaid expansion to low-income, childless adults – which CT was the first state to adopt – could be discontinued. In CT, this part of the program (HUSKY D) covers over 200,000 people. Additionally, with Republican discussions of “block granting” Medicaid, funding levels may not be enough for Connecticut to maintain HUSKY as-is.
– Access Health CT and other exchanges could end. The Republicans want to dismantle the “marketplaces” which consumers use to purchase health care on the individual market.
– Essential Health Benefits could change. The Affordable Care Act lays out 10 essential health benefits that insurance plans must cover. These may be reduced; some may be eliminated.
We will not know what will become of the Affordable Care Act for at least a few months. The new Congress and President take office on January 20th and health care reform has been targeted for the first 100 days. However, though Republicans have agreed they would like to repeal the ACA, they have not coalesced around ideas for its replacement.
So – until we know more – continue on, with enrolling individuals, seeking the health care that is appropriate for you, and with reading up on the latest proposals. There are several articles in the Health Policy News section below that review the issue; CHCACT will continue to keep you informed of developments.
In other news – today is World Diabetes Day. With diabetes being one of the most common chronic conditions of FQHC patients, I know all of you are focused on prevention, education and treatment. Want to assess your own risk? Try out this handy tool!
