Student Athletes – Register with NCAA Clearinghouse

Juniors or seniors interested in playing sports at a Division I or II college should go to NCAAclearinghouse.net and register online so their academic eligibility can be determined. Sophomores may register but the NCAA will want to see final grades from the first two years initially! An official transcript will need to be requested by the student and sent from the high school. After that initial request, final transcripts after sophomore, junior and senior years will automatically be sent to the Clearinghouse for all NCAA registered students. Students must also have their SAT or ACT scores officially sent from the testing service.

Selective Service Registration for Senior Boys

Senior boys are reminded that they must register with the Selective Service when they turn eighteen or they may preregister now if they like. Without this registration, no boys will be eligible for federal funding for college including the Pell Grant, work study or federally subsidized student loans. Students may register on the web at www.sss.gov or through the FAFSA form. Some boys may have already preregistered when they received their driver’s license.

Academic Common Market for Southern State Universities

The state of Delaware has an agreement with many southern states wherein Delaware residents accepted into a major not offered at a Delaware public college can receive in-state tuition to that southern state university. More information can be found here. Please note that the state of Delaware often has grants available through financial need for students at colleges outside the state. Qualifications may differ per state.

Have You Checked the Net Price Calculator for College?

Federal mandate now states that all colleges must offer a net price calculator on their website. This provides the family with a “best faith estimate” of what their out-of- pocket expenses may be for the student’s first year in college. This estimate should take into account student loans and any potential merit scholarship. Families can also log onto https://professionals.collegeboard.org/higher-ed/financial-aid/netprice which lists each college’s NPC. Often colleges will offer reduced application fees or waivers for students from families suffering economic hardship (independently of whether you receive free or reduced lunch or state subsidy.) Some scholarship programs specifically target such students. If your child falls within this category, please contact his/her school counselor to inform of such circumstances.

State Funding for Students with Disabilities

Seniors who have a diagnosed disability of any sort can apply for state funding through the Division of Vocational Rehabilitation. This state organization can assist students in diverse ways so that a college education is affordable, along with any accommodations for the disability. For more information, contact 302-761-8275.

College Resource Information

The Fiske Guide to Colleges is an excellent source for college researching. Another website supported by current college students which reflects their honest opinions about colleges is unigo.com. Additionally, whatwilltheylearn.org measures knowledge gained on campus in key academic disciplines. Peter Van Buskirk’s http://www.bestcollegefit.com/ follows student and parent concerns as they progress through the school year in the college search and application process. Of course, don’t forget to review CSW’s own counseling website for overall general information on the college application process.
