ALA seeks proposals for 2017-2018 Diversity Research Grants through April 15

ALA News reports that “the American Library Association (ALA) Office for Diversity, Literacy and Outreach Services seeks proposals for the Diversity Research Grant program. Applications may address any diversity-related topic which addresses critical gaps in the knowledge of diversity, equity, and outreach issues within library and information science.

The application deadline has been extended to midnight central time on April 15, 2017…”

Major educational content providers and distributors join forces to fight counterfeit textbooks

KnowledgeSpeak reports that “academic publishers Cengage, McGraw-Hill Education, and Pearson have joined forces with Ingram and Chegg, Inc. to have them adopt and implement a set of Anti-Counterfeit Best Practices designed to address the growing problem of counterfeit print textbooks. The Anti-Counterfeit Best Practices are intended to assist distributors with combating counterfeits of print textbooks that hurt students, educators, publishers and distributors…”

FCC Halts Internet Privacy Requirements

infoDOCKET reports that “the FCC has halted a set of privacy rules that would have required internet providers to more responsibly handle your sensitive data.

Internet providers have been lobbying to overturn the entire set of privacy rules for a couple months now — in short, they don’t like that they’ll soon have to ask permission to share your web browsing habits…”

Art History: Research Tools: British Sales (1680–1780) Data Now Available in the Getty Provenance Index

Also according to infoDOCKET “the Getty Provenance Index now includes data for British sales from 1680–1780, a period when London was beginning to establish itself as a hub of the international art trade.

This release—which completes Phase II of a larger collaborative research project between the Getty’s Project for the Study of Collecting and Provenance and the National Gallery, London—adds a further 137,780 records from 1,085 catalogs to the index, bringing the total number of records in the British Sales database to over 450,000…”

Wolters Kluwer’s PrepU Solution Gets Its 1 Billionth Answer

Information Today reports that “Wolters Kluwer announced that students who use its PrepU adaptive learning platform while getting their healthcare-industry education have submitted more than 1 billion answers “to customized questions generated through formative assessments in their courses and preparation for licensure,” according to the press release.

Digitized Manuscripts includes two presentations: “Making Use of Digitized Medieval Manuscripts” on the challenges and possibilities of using the International Image Interoperability Framework (IIIF), and “Digital Tools for Manuscript Study,” by a team from the University of Toronto on a project there to build open, modular tool environments to support image-based scholarly research.
