Cooke recipient of 2017 Achievement in Library Diversity Research Award
ALA News reports that “Nicole Cooke, assistant professor in the iSchool at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, is the recipient of the 2017 American Library Association (ALA) Achievement in Library Diversity Research Award. As part of its ongoing support of the propagation of library-based diversity research, the Diversity Research Grants Advisory Committee, a subcommittee of the ALA Council Committee on Diversity, and the ALA Office for Diversity, Literacy and Outreach Services are pleased to recognize her for her contributions to the profession and her promotion of diversity within it. Achievement is defined as a body of work or a groundbreaking piece whose dissemination advances our understanding of or sparks new research in the areas of diversity. The office for Diversity, Literacy and Outreach Services began designating this honor in 2004.
Cooke’s work moves beyond documenting disparities in the numbers of racial and ethnic minority faculty at LIS. She goes on to suggest recruitment, inclusion and retention strategies that address systemic weaknesses. Likewise, her identification of diverse populations is but a preamble to her instruction in developing cultural competence and services to diverse populations…”

Ed Spade is now the Senior Manager of Content Acquisition, North America, for Lightning Source LLC. He joined Ingram in 2015 as a Senior Content Acquisition Manager, consulting publishers on their strategies for print and digital publishing, including digital content management and distribution and product development and licensing.
Michael Bradford is now the Independent Publisher Advertising Manager. He will focus on Marketing and Product Development for Publishers Advertising Services. He most recently served as Digital Sales Specialist

OCLC Research and ALISE name recipients of 2017 Library and Information Science Research Grants
According to Library Technology Guides “OCLC Research and the Association for Library and Information Science Education (ALISE) have awarded research grants for three projects to be conducted by four researchers. The awards were presented January 19 at the ALISE 2017 Annual Conference Awards Luncheon in Atlanta, Georgia.
Lorraine Richards Bornn, Drexel University, will examine two different case study settings in an effort to highlight the costs of research data management (RDM) and reveal the challenges of assessing RDM costs. This project will provide some much needed empirical information, as well as provide a guide to help institutions think about costing RDM services and the difficulties involved with doing this.
Devendra Potnis, The University of Tennessee, will develop and test a Financial Information Literacy Toolkit to Educate boRrowers (FILTER), in collaboration with public libraries in India, to build financial information literacy among illiterate and semi-literate borrowers to enable them to graduate out of poverty. This project will demonstrate the value of public libraries in implementing ambitious financial inclusion initiatives undertaken by governments in developing nations.
Charles Senteio and Nancy Kranich, Rutgers University, will examine libraries’ current activities aimed at engaging underrepresented communities to improve health and wellness, with the goal of offering new insight to inform how both public libraries and academic/health libraries can enhance the effectiveness of their current support for community health and wellness. The researchers will consider findings in the context of how libraries serving diverse populations can develop and nurture meaningful community connections to support health and wellness…”
