WPI Announces the Appointment of Anna Gold as University Librarian

“Worcester Polytechnic Institute has announced “the appointment of Anna Gold as its new university librarian. Until recently dean of library services at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, she has previously held senior library leadership positions at a number of nationally known universities and institutions, including MIT, the University of California, San Diego, and the National Science Foundation. She will join the university in March…

Gold has spent more than 30 years spent working in and leading libraries around the country. After earning a BA in literature at the University of California, Santa Cruz, and an MLS (master of library science) from Catholic University of America, she spent two years at Georgetown University, where she became acting head of the Government Document Section, and then joined the Library of Congress, where she rose to become selection officer in the Collections Policy Office. In 1994, she went to work for the National Science Foundation, where her accomplishments included reestablishing the NSF’s library services and leading the agency’s website…

Her work has been recognized with a number of honors, including acceptance to the inaugural class of the Cal Poly Leadership Forum, the NSF’s Director’s Award for Program Management Excellence, and the Library of Congress’ Special Achievement Award and Outstanding Performance Award. She is a member of the Association for Information Science and Technology, American Library Association (ALA), the Association of College and Research Libraries, and the ALA’s Science and Technology Section, among other organizations…”

Alumnus Norman Powell makes $5 million gift to UCLA Library

“The UCLA Newsroom reports that “UCLA alumnus Norman Powell has given $5 million to create an endowment that will support the highest priorities of UCLA’s university librarian.

The university librarian is a dean-level position charged with overseeing and providing strategic direction for UCLA’s eight campus libraries and special collections. Ginny Steel, who has held the position since 2013, will be the inaugural Norman and Armena Powell University Librarian.

“As an alumnus and son of our longtime university librarian, Norman knows first-hand that a gift to the UCLA library is like giving a scholarship to every student and a fellowship to every researcher,” said UCLA Chancellor Gene Block. “We thank him for his generosity, which will ensure that the library continues to play an essential role in the intellectual journeys of every student, faculty and staff member.”

Powell’s gift will enable the library to continue to evolve and innovate, and to best serve the needs of the 21st-century university. Endowment funds will support the library’s unparalleled collections, innovative services that fuel teaching and research across campus, and ongoing efforts to ensure that its physical spaces and online resources can evolve to meet the needs of UCLA’s students and faculty…”

EBSCO Health appoints Dr. Scott Barron as Editor of Pediatrics for DynaMed Plus

Dr. Barron brings with him over 20 years of experience in General and Emergency Pediatric Medicine to this new position.

A graduate of the University of South Florida College of Medicine, Dr. Barron completed his Pediatric Residency at Loma Linda University Medical Center. He is an Associate Professor of Pediatrics at the University Of Central Florida College Of Medicine and a Pediatric Emergency Physician at the Nemours Children’s Hospital in Orlando, Florida. Board certified by the American Board of Pediatrics, he also served as the Director of Evidence-Based Pathways for the Pediatric Emergency Department at Nemours Children’s Hospital and as a leader in medical student education…”

Cedarville U. librarian recognized as among best in Ohio

“Cedarville University academic librarian Julie Deardorff was the recipient of this year’s Jay Ladd Distinguished Service Award, which was presented by the Academic Library Association of Ohio (ALAO).

The ALAO recognized her for her efforts promoting academic libraries on the Cedarville campus and within the state as well as her work with the Centennial Library Careers Program, an influential library career exploration program in Ohio…”

Also according to KnowledgeSpeak “the Society for Scholarly Publishing (SSP) has announced that Kelly Smykal will be assisting the SSP and the Development Committee with sponsorship and exhibit sales. Kelly works in Kellen’s Chicago office and will be the primary contact for exhibits, sponsorship and advertising. Kellen provides association management services for SSP.

Smykal joined Kellen in May, 2013, bringing her 10 years of experience in sales and recruiting to her current position.
