Dan Cohen Receives 2016 LITA/Library Hi Tech Award

ALA News reports that “Dan Cohen is the winner of the 2016 LITA/Library Hi Tech Award for Outstanding Communication in Library and Information Technology.
The Library and Information Technology Association (LITA) and Emerald Group Publishing sponsor the Award, which recognizes outstanding individuals or institutions for their long-term contributions in the area of Library and Information Science technology and its application. The winner receives a citation and a $1,000 stipend.
The Award Committee selected Cohen because of his massive contributions through his work with the DPLA, Zotero, publishing, online exhibitions/collections, and his contributions through his writings. His work with the DPLA in particular stood out to the group.
Cohen is the founding Executive Director of the Digital Public Library of America. Previously he was a Professor of History in the Department of History and Art History at George Mason University and the Director of the Roy Rosenzweig Center for History and New Media. He is the co-author of Digital History: A Guide to Gathering, Preserving, and Presenting the Past on the Web (University of Pennsylvania Press, 2005), author of Equations from God: Pure Mathematics and Victorian Faith (Johns Hopkins University Press, 2007), and co-editor of Hacking the Academy (University of Michigan Press, 2012). I have published articles and book chapters on new media, the history of mathematics and religion, the teaching of history, scholarly communication, and the future of the humanities in a digital age in journals such as the Journal of American History, Victorian Studies, and Rethinking History…”
David Leonard Named President of the Boston Public Library
According to infoDOCKET “the Boston Public Library has named David Leonard as president four days after a California librarian declined to take the job.
David Leonard has been serving as interim president for nearly a year, after previous president Amy Ryan resigned last summer. Ryan came under fire after two pieces of art worth $630,000 temporarily went missing under her watch.
The library initially offered the job to Jill Bourne, who currently leads the San Jose city library system, after a nationwide presidential search. She accepted the position but changed her mind on Friday, citing “personal reasons that were not anticipated while I participated in this process.” After that, Leonard was offered the job.

SAGE hires eLife’s Mulvany
According to The Bookseller “SAGE has hired Ian Mulvany, head of technology at open access science journal eLife, to the new role of head of product innovation.
Mulvany, who joins the publisher in September, will sit in its innovation unit with a remit to engage with big data and social research.
SAGE said it was “excited by changes in the research landscape as a result of the availability of varied, vast datasets that can be used by researchers to provide insights into the social world.” Mulvany will be actively shaping product strategy and development in this area, driving product innovation beyond SAGE’s traditional publishing…

American Psychological Association Appoints Aaron Wood Senior Director of Product Management
The American Psychological Association has appointed Aaron Wood as senior director of product management for its Office of Publications and Databases, charged with managing APA’s line of online electronic products and platforms and developing new solutions that meet the needs of psychologists.
Wood comes to the APA from Ingram Content Group, where he was in charge of product development for digital libraries and e-commerce capabilities. Before that, he was vice president of systems and data architecture at Alexander Street Press and associate director for collections and metadata services at University of Calgary Libraries…
For decades, APA has published the leading journals, books and databases for behavioral scientists. In recent years, APA has expanded its offerings with PsycNET, the market-leading hosting platform, which is optimized for the psychological sciences. Earlier this year, APA launched PsycINFO Data Solutions and is preparing to launch another new solution this summer.
Wood has a master’s of library and information science from the University of Western Ontario.
