Academic Librarians’ Views on Their Spaces

This post from Insider Higher ED cites a survey of academic librarians by the Sasaki Associates, that “when colleges and universities renovate their libraries, the changes they make often don’t align with the priorities of librarians themselves… The survey, of more than 400 librarians at nearly 200 institutions, found, for example, that 18 percent of renovations of libraries removed shelving when only 1 percent of librarians ranked the removal as a high priority, and 11 percent installed cafes when only 3 percent believed that to be a high priority.

Perceptions 2015: An International Survey of Library Automation

Marshall Breeding, Editor, Library Technology Guides has posted this report based on their last library automation perceptions survey.  “Some interesting themes can be seen in the analysis of this year’s survey results. Libraries using legacy products seem poised to move on to new systems. Those now using products like Aleph, Voyager, and Millennium show ever growing interest in migrating to new systems. Open source products achieve satisfaction levels similar to proprietary products. Results also indicate a tendency for libraries at least consider products offered by their incumbent vendor. Smaller libraries show much more delight with their products and vendors. Large libraries judge on a much more severe scale…”

The data spans January to September of 2015, and compared to the same period in 2014, publishers’ net revenue declined 2% from $12.1 billion to $11.9 billion. Driving much of the decline, as Book Business blogger Caleb Mason predicted last week, was a significant drop in ebook revenue. Net revenue for ebooks declined 11.1%, the majority of which came from a significant 44.8% drop in the children and YA category…”
