Expanding Horizons is the second installment of the Writer’s Block’s school-sponsored literary and arts magazine. They released their first publication, New Beginnings, a year ago last March. The magazines feature original literary and art pieces from students at the University of Alabama in Huntsville. A blind jury carefully selected each piece. The release party Thursday will honor the writers and artists published in this year’s magazine. Writer’s Block President, Qiana Hunt, describes the works as “a good mix of whimsy, drama, and eeriness.”

The theme Expanding Horizons evokes the process of considering new, unique ideas. Accordingly, the magazine will include pieces that Hunt describes as “provocative and intelligent” which “make you think about your perspective of the world.” She adds, “That’s something every college student should be eager to try.”

The literary and arts magazine provides a unique outlet for UAH, a university widely known for its STEM programs. “It’s pretty amazing to see what our students – many of whom are engineering or science majors – can do with a pen and paper,” the Writer’s Block’s Faculty Sponsor, Dr. Friedman, noted.

The previous publication, New Beginnings, was also a point of interest for students and parents during orientations in the past year. “For students interested in attending UAH, the literary magazine is a beacon welcoming them into a school that is rich in both the arts and sciences.” Dr. Friedman stated.

With the release party just days away, the Writer’s Block has no plans of slowing down. Hunt expressed the organization’s desire for the magazine to become an “annual tradition.” They hope to improve their magazine next year by drawing the attention of more potential sponsors, writers, and artists.

This year’s magazine, Expanding Horizons, is their strongest selling point so far. Dr. Friedman described the new publication as “even better, slicker, and more inviting than its predecessor.” The release party takes place March 10, 2016 at 7:00 PM in room 301 of the Shelby Center (SST). All students, faculty, and guests are welcome to partake in this opportunity to meet the featured writers and artists. Business casual dress is required.

Magazines will then be released across campus beginning March 11. Students and faculty will be able to pick up a copy of Expanding Horizons from the magazine racks stationed in several UAH buildings.
