1. What does your Pilates studio offer for families in the community?
Pilates is an exercise that can be applied to every aspect of life. Regardless of your age or physical limitations, the exercises developed by Joseph Pilates are beneficial to everyone to develop strength, flexibility, and limit pain through controlled movement of the body. Our clients include husbands and wives, brothers, mothers and daughters…once people begin, they often bring their families, as they quickly find out that Pilates leads to a more active, positive life by learning to live more fully in the body.
We understand the different needs of people and aim to fit into their lives accordingly. We understand the new mom who brings her newborn along to a lesson so she can have a dedicated hour to her well-being, or a busy parent fitting in an early morning mat class so they can be free later in the day for their family. Everyone’s story of what led them to Pilates might be different, but the end goal is the same–for our studio to be a place of learning and a pathway to individuals functioning better in their bodies. Pilates enhances a healthy lifestyle and promotes a well-rounded, active life that in turn benefits the community as a whole.
At DPC we also take every opportunity to support the community and families in need. We hold special event mat classes with guest instructors at least twice a year to raise money for a local charity, and we encourage our clients and instructors to make donations to a local organization each holiday season. Our recent donations have included the Champaign County Humane Society, The Eastern Illinois Foodbank, donations for local troops overseas, and the Mills Breast Cancer Institute. We are happy to give back to the community that supports us.
2. What are some tips for someone new to Pilates?
Pilates teaches you to use your body in a very different way than one would normally choose to do something….like bending over to pick up a baby or getting in and out of a car correctly. Because of this, the new Pilates client must be patient and gentle with themselves while learning new movement skills. At DPC we help you learn and understand this and are with you in the process. A new client may not be given “exercises” to do at home, but rather will be given concepts to think about. For example, while standing in the grocery line, we tell you how you can exercise there, by merely pulling your belly button to your backbone. By doing this you will find your back doesn’t hurt! Pilates is not just exercise, so when you come in for your first lesson, while you will do exercises, you will also be learning Pilates principles such as Centering Concentration and Control. You will learn how to do this within each exercise and also how to do it while you carry out your daily activities, like holding your baby or cooking dinner.
3. Are there any specials during the holiday season?
We have some wonderful opportunities to offer the community this holiday season! Our Introductory Pilates Package is available for $150, and includes a 30-minute consultation with a Certified Instructor, and three Private Pilates Lessons for $150. This is a savings of over 15 percent off our regular lesson prices and is a wonderful way to find out what Pilates can add to your life.
In addition, our studio will be open on Shop Local Saturdays, and as a member of the Champaign Center Partnership, we’ll be participating in the Champaign Partnership Wishlist! We invite you to stop by our studio on these dates and meet some of our Instructors and enjoy a cup of apple cider. Anyone who purchases a gift certificate on a Shop Local Saturday will receive a FREE half hour Pilates Lesson! You can also drop your “wish” in our wishlist box and let a loved one know you’d be thrilled to receive a Dulak Pilates Center gift certificate this year!

4. What makes your Studio special?
At DPC, we offer a valuable experience of learning the very best Pilates as taught to studio owner Janice Dulak, by Romana Kryzanowska, heir to the Pilates method. All of our Instructors are certified through the Romana’s Pilates extensive training program, and we are a team committed to each other and our clients. Studio owner Janice Dulak is a Romana’s Pilates Master Instructor Trainer, accomplished author, and world-renowned teacher. We are fortunate to have her expertise right here in Champaign.
