Inverter Generator vs Conventional Generator

Normally, when you begin an online search for “generators”, you will be flooded with a wave of products that seem similar to each other at first glance, but when you roll your eyes down and take a look at the price, you get a nasty surprise. You might ask yourself: “If both of these are 2000W generators, why does one cost 50% more than the other?”

Well, we don’t blame you for thinking like that, because company nomenclatures and product pricing can get extremely confusing at times. Unless you know how a generator works or about the different types of generators out there, you’ll be left scratching your head and unsure what to buy for your home.

Here is the deal- If you plan on powering machines that are not very sensitive to power such as lights, fans, heaters, irons, pumps, etc. then you will do fine with a regular generator. But if you want to power sensitive appliances such as computers, portable microwave ovens, and compact toasters, then you need to get an inverter generator in order to ensure optimal performance, as well as a longer lifetime for your machines.

How do Generators Work?

Well, generators are basically a means to convert one form of energy to another. They take the fuel in the gas tank and use it to power an internal combustion engine which is normally a 2 stroke single-cylinder engine (for the most basic models). Better and costlier models will usually have a costlier 4-stroke engine that is both quieter as well as more efficient.

This engine is attached via a flywheel to an alternator which converts the mechanical rotations into electrical power (AC current) by using the principle of electrical induction. Normally, the engines of a conventional AC generator rotate at around 3000 rpm, and basic models are incapable of altering their engine speeds irrespective of the load on the receiving end. When the engine spins faster, the generator pumps out more power, and when it spins slowly, the power output is reduced.

So why does all of this matter? Well you see, a conventional generator does not output the “cleanest” of AC currents. AC current or alternating current is basically an artificially generated form of electric current which flows in the form of alternate power cycles, as opposed to DC current (direct current) which is always stable. Conventional generators output square or block wave current, while the wall outlets in our homes output pure sine wave current. Most appliances these days are designed to operate on sinusoidal (sine) wave current, and even though they will work on square wave AC current, they will not run as efficiently.

For example, if you supply square wave current to a brushless motor it will run hotter and louder than usual. If you supply square wave current to a computer, it will not run as efficiently as it should and the circuits could get damaged over the long run, especially the sensitive silicon chips inside such as the CPU, RAM, Graphics Card, etc. However, inverter generators specialize in delivering pure, clean sinusoidal AC current that is similar to the current that you get from your power company via the socket in the wall.

So why do people still use conventional generators if their AC output is not as “clean” or “pure” as that of inverter generators? The short answer to that would be “because they are cheaper and easier to service/maintain”.

When it comes to power output, things tend to vary quite a bit depending on the specific model and pricing. However, conventional generators are capable of delivering anywhere between 800 to 40,000 watts of power, while your average inverter generator will be restricted to a maximum power output of nearly 4000 watts. But hey, don’t jump ship just yet. With 4000 watts of power, you will be able to run the rooftop AC in your RV, while roasting a chicken in the microwave and watching TV. So yeah, you don’t need more than 4000W unless you plan on running some of local power delivery service from the backyard for your neighbors.

Think about it, even if you don’t own a RV and plan to use the inverter generator at home in case of a power grid failure or some sort natural calamity, 3000-4000 watts should be all you need. You can power nearly 4 fans, 8-10 LED/CFL lights, a TV, a microwave, a water heater, and a laptop with all that power; and you’ll still have some headroom for additional appliances such as a blender, toaster, etc.

So even though conventional generators are capable of generating more maximum power per dollar (judging from price of the actual generator itself, not efficiency or running costs), you don’t necessarily need any more power than a high end inverter generators have to offer. — Fuel Capacity

If you have researched commercial or home grade generators online, then you have probably noticed that the inverter generators are smaller and lighter than their conventional counterparts. However, this extra portability comes at a cost. Due to their petite size, inverter generators are outfitted with smaller fuel tanks, whose capacity typically ranges between 1 to 2 gallons. However, that was just the fuel capacity. But do we care about who boasts a larger belly? No, we care about how much electricity we can get out of that fuel. And that is where the fight equalizes between the two, with a slight advantage for the inverter generator.

It is true that inverter generators pack slightly smaller fuel tanks. However, all of them come with extremely efficient microprocessor-assisted 4-stroke engines. These engines have been loaded with all sorts of efficiency optimizations from the spark plug to the exhaust. Which is why, they deliver more power per drop of fuel in comparison to the older 2-stroke engines used in conventional generators.

Another important point to be aware of is; conventional generators are incapable of decreasing their engine speed based on the load at the other end. A 4000 watt conventional generator will run its engine at the rated maximum of 3600 rpm regardless of what appliance is connected on the receiving end. It doesn’t care if you connect a power drill + microwave combo, or a 40 watt bulb, the engine will keep drinking fuel at the same rate.

As wonderful as inverter generators are due to their efficiency, clean power and quiet operation, they can’t compete with conventional gas generators when it comes to raw power. So, if your power needs are relatively small then an inverter generator is a great choice. Just be aware that an inverter generator won’t solve all of your power needs.

So with a conventional generator, you’re literally throwing away precious fuel whenever you are not using at least 70% of the power that it is rated at.

Well then, what about the inverter generator? — Portability

Yet another clear win for the inverter generator. Even small sized conventional generators are bound to be larger than inverter generators due to their clunky engine designs and large fuel tanks. If you tend to travel a lot, or if you need a generator for camping and picnics, then an inverter generator is definitely the way to go. Most of them weigh around the 50-pound mark (dry weight), and are smaller than a 20” square box. They also include ergonomic carry handles on the top, so you can pick them up and move them around, just like a suitcase.

— Price

This is the only area in which the conventional generator scores a clear victory over its newer, quieter, and more efficient counterpart. No matter how hard you try, you’ll not be able to find an inverter generator that is priced equal to, or less than a conventional generator of similar power rating. It requires research and custom built parts to reduce size, noise, emissions, etc. while still maintaining performance. If you don’t need clean AC power and your appliance is capable of running off a square/block wave AC current, then a conventional generator will do just fine.

Here are some other scenarios where you might want to get a conventional generator instead of an inverter generator.

You have an appliance that is not very sensitive to current quality, and needs to run continuously for like at least 15-16 hours a day.

You don’t really care about heat output, noise, etc. because the generator is going to be located at a large distance from your home or room.

You’re on a budget and need something cheap for your lights, fans, heaters, etc. (All of these are not very sensitive to current quality).

How do Inverter Generators Work?

Okay, nothing too complex here. An inverter generator gets its name from the fact that it combines an inverter and generator into one machine. But why would you need to do something like that? What is wrong with using just the generator alone? Good you asked, because there is quite a huge difference between the regular generator and an inverter generator in terms of output power quality.

If you didn’t pay attention during your college classes or if you are not familiar with electricity and its types in general, you must be thinking “Wait, there are types of AC current? Shouldn’t I just be concerned with voltage and amperage?” Well, you electrical appliances run on alternating current which is generated artificially. Direct current is the current that is obtained from batteries, and is a natural form of electricity that is also found in the bodies of animals (nervous system). It is basically known as constant current.

How inverter generators work, continued…

If you were to draw a graph of a 5V DC current signal, it would be a straight line with a value of 5 on the volts axis, continuing until you shut the switch. However this is how AC works — A 5V AC current signal begins it life at a value of 0V, and rises till 5V. It then crashes down to zero and goes to negative 5V, (switching polarity or current direction) and rises to zero volts again.

AC signals are what our appliances use, and this is what comes out when you generate electricity from a generator or at the power plant via electrical induction. Your home supply gives you a 120V (USA, 240V elsewhere), 60 Hz current via the wall outlets.

Okay, but why does any of that matter? Here’s why- your light bulb may not care if it receives a square or sinusoidal AC current, but the microprocessor in your laptop or desktop thinks this stuff is really important. In fact, the power supply unit in your computer is especially designed to provide pure sine wave AC current to the sensitive silicon chips inside, which are really particular about the type of current that they are fed (and have operating voltages of less than 1-3 volts). Remember how alternating current rises and falls between positive and negative cycles? Well, that change is much more abrupt with a square wave, than it is with a sine wave.

In a square wave or block wave, the current and voltage crashes and rises immediately, while a sine wave is curved and more gradual. All modern appliances today are designed to perform at their peak only with sinusoidal AC current. They will work with any AC current, but they will run hotter and at lower efficiency. Some ultra-sensitive components such as microprocessors (found in your oven, phone, refrigerator, washing machine, laptops, etc.) will actually be harmed if they are supplied with square wave current.

That’s fine, but what does an inverter generator contain that a regular generator doesn’t have?

In all inverter generators, you have two parts — a regular three-phase generator, and an inverter circuit. Actually, there are two inverter circuits — the first one converts the AC power from the generator into DC power, while the next one (reverse inverter) takes that DC power, filters it by running it through some special capacitors, modifies it into a pure AC signal, steps up the voltage, and sends it out to your appliance. Sounds simple on paper, but in reality the whole thing happens extremely fast and loss is kept to a minimum through all the conversion processes while also maintaining the integrity of the output signal.

What to Consider when Buying an Inverter Generator

There are literally thousands of models out there, and almost every manufacture will be running around claiming that their product is “THE ONE”. However the biggest and costliest inverter generator doesn’t always have to be the best. You see, the best inverter generator out there is going to be the one that is best for YOU. For determining which inverter generator is best for you, there are some parameters that you need to focus on. Discover what you truly need by answering these questions-

— How much power?

Generally, you can know about the power requirements of your home or RV by adding up the wattage ratings of all the components that you expect to be running at the same time from your generator. Take that number, and add another 20-25% on top for future expansion. That should be the generator wattage you need to aim for. For example, let’s say you’re getting a generator for supplying power at your next outdoor camping trip. You must first make a list of all the components that are expected to run at the same time, and think of all the possible combinations.

Take the combination with the highest power requirement and add 20-25% on top. For example, your portable toaster will probably use 600 watts, while the compact electric barbecue will use around 1200 watts. Add in 200 watts for lighting, and if you plan on using a laptop add another 250 watts. That brings our total to nearly 2250 watts. Get a 2500+ watt inverter generator to stay safe.

However, if you plan on getting an inverter generator for your RV, your rooftop AC alone will eat up 2500-2800 watts of power. Then your microwave will take up another 1000 watts, while the TV will pull another 120-150 watts. So you must get an inverter generator rated at 4000W, or above to power all of this stuff. Generators that supply more power will require extra fuel per minute to function, although modern inverter generators only use as much fuel as is required.

For example, your 4000W generator will probably consume the same amount of fuel (smart engine speed modification, remember?) as your 1000W ultra-compact generator if both are supplying power to appliances rated at the exact same wattage. IE. if both are connected to similar loads.

— How much time?

By time, we mean up-time or run-time for your new inverter generator. If you plan on using it to supply power for a camping trip or picnic, then you probably need a medium-large capacity fuel tank in the generator. Yes, you can refill it, but having a larger tank means that pauses in power will be less frequent since you might want to shut down the generator while refilling it. However, if you just want a generator to power a few lights and fans during a power cut, then even a small tank will suffice. Size is not the first point of attention while purchasing an inverter generator, since most of these units tend to be pretty compact anyways, even the ones with a large power generation capacity. But, if you are traveling with your generator inside the RV or boat, then size can end up mattering quite a lot.

Apart from all of these major points, you’ll also need to consider the safety features and usability of the generator, as well as maintenance and price. Some inverter generators will also come with parallel operation ability, and most include ports for cables with which you can daisy chain two inverters. If you require 2000 W of power and you have two 1000W generators lying nearby, then you can daisy chain them together to generate the required 2000 watts. This is a feature that is almost completely exclusive to inverter generators, and is not found in conventional generators.
