Its that time of the year when the culture and heritage of Terrace and surrounding areas come together to celebrate the August long weekend community festival.
This festival includes exciting Legion Parade and magnificent fireworks at the Ferry Island with concerts in the park at George Little park and a blast of beach volleyball.
Riverboat Days is an entire week to share the history, the culture and simply the unequaled natural setting around Terrace. So for 2015 encourage that child to join a crafts workshop at Heritage Park, sample delicious fare in the “Tastes of Terrace” tour, enter a team in the Men’s Soccer Tournament or join a walking tour of the downtown and learn some surprising stories about the area’s history. Crimestoppers “Jail & Bail”
Time: 11:00 am to 2:00 pm
Place: Bell Media Parking Lot (4625 Lazelle Avenue)
Sirens and flashing lights will be all over the downtown this afternoon as “criminals” will be rounded up to land in jail in the Bell Media parking lot. And they don’t get out till the bail is paid. But those “crooks” could be that prankster of a coworker or annoying big sister—one just needs to conjure up some “crime” and register in advance. After all, it’s the annual fundraiser for Crimestoppers and it is all for fun.

Community Fundraising Barbecue

A special feature of this annual event is that a worthy cause is designated by the previous year’s recipient to receive the proceeds of the barbecue. Special Olympics will receive this year’s proceeds, thanks to 2014’s Terrace Child Development Centre. Everyone’s gathered at Brolly Square. Just $5 will get you well fed, plus there are door prizes.

Elite Black Belts – Taekwondo Competition

The best black belts in Canada will be in Terrace to showcase the martial art of Taekwondo! Plus there will be a beer garden and bands. In addition to the competition, local club members, young and old, will be performing demonstrations such as board-breaking and weapons patterns. The competition runs from 6 pm to 9 pm; music from 9 pm till midnight. Literally a huge kick off to Riverboat Days 2015!

The Opening Ceremony is a little pomp, a little nostalgia, refreshments and music but mostly a fun way to launch into the excitement of Riverboat Days. It is also the formal introduction of the annual Riverboat Days Captain and Queen, in which long standing community leaders are conferred a special title and a week to reign. For 2015 we welcome Ron and Mavis Ramsey, well known for their work with the non-profit Helping Hands of Terrace Society.

This year the parade theme is “Sports in the Northwest.” So sprint on down to Lakelse Avenue and be part of the fun! The parade starts at City Hall on Lakelse Avenue and travels east to end at the Legion. (Road closures in effect downtown during parade. Bus routes will be altered.) Eby Street Fish Hatchery – Open House

What was once the City’s water supply source is now this small but vital fish hatchery tucked away at the foot of the Bench. Hatchery volunteers will explain how the hatchery works, the taking of coho salmon brood stock, tagging of fry and release into local rivers such as the Zymacord. A hands-on experience to learn about the life cycle of salmon.

With over a million records sold, Juno honours and induction into the Western Canadian Hall of Fame, Kenny Shields and Streetheart have been a force in the Canadian rock music scene. Immediately recognizable hits like Hollywood, Action and What Kind of Love is This are a testament to the strong song writing and musicianship of Streetheart. Then there is the amazing voice of Kenney Shields, at his best with the unmistakable cover of the Rolling Stones’ Under My Thumb. This band was founded in the 1970s but still “play with a fierce energy and precision that other bands would be hard-pressed to match.” No wonder so much of their work turned gold and platinum. The Great Terrace Rotary Wild Duck Race

Thousands of yellow ducks leap from a helicopter into the west channel of the Skeena River and race under the bridge to finish at Ferry Island. If you’ve bought your $20 Duck Race ticket, you could win $25,000 cash, Hawkair return tickets for two to Vancouver, a $1000 gift card to Terrace Home Hardware or $500 gift card from Canadian Tire. Come join the more than1700 people who have assisted artist Joe Mandur with carving a 40′ foot totem pole that is to honor Haida artist and teacher Freda Diesing. A long-time resident of the Terrace area, Freda Diesing was instrumental in revival of northwest coast art. You will have the opportunity to be photographed while you do your carving, which will be included in a book to be published once the totem pole is raised.

Try your hand at any of the shooting sports on display. This is a “Hands-On” experience, giving participants an opportunity to safely learn to shoot various firearms (pistols, rifles, shotguns and a booming black powder cannon) as well as archery. Shoot different calibers of handguns, shotguns at moving clay targets, black powder rifles, 22 caliber biathlon rifles, as well as arrows at life size 3-D animal and paper targets, after some one-on-one basic instruction. Children under 11 may only participate in the archery and .22 cal rifle events. Coffee, cold drinks, hamburgers and hot dogs are also available for sale
