Taking care of a child with autism in northern B.C. can be an isolating experience.
But the Canucks Autism Network is doing what it can to help families get a much needed break.
20 families from northern B.C. with autistic children are being flown down to Vancouver.
Parents will get a much needed respite, while also having the opportunity to network with other parents and support workers.
Parents will also be at ease, knowing their children will be attending a weekend camp that’s catered to the specific needs of children with autism.
Prince Rupert’s Christine Danroth is one of those parents who have been identified as needing respite care by social workers.
She says having even a weekend off is tremendously important for the parents, and the kids.
Danroth says while the support she gets for her son Parker in school is excellent, it’s finding that support outside of school that’s a challenge, with most of the support workers based in Vancouver.
The camp is run by a the Canucks Autism Network, a non-profit organization, along with the West Coast Fishing Club’s Fishing for Kids Tournament, charter flights donated by Pacific Coastal Airlines, and hotel accommodations provided by Pacific Gateway Hotel.
