In spite of Beijing’s systematic attempt to cut Tibet off from the rest of the world, Tibetans are embracing new social practices which gives ability to communicate ideas, share stories, conduct business, and express opinions. Beijing’s efforts to undermine the Tibetan language for the last half century Tibetans are now texting and tweeting in their language.
On December 14 at press conference in Dharamshala, India Dr Lobasang Sangay, the Kalon Tripa (political leader) of the Central Tibetan Administration (CTA), relaunced the CTA’s official website, www.tibet.net. The website was dedicated to Lhakar – a spiritual movement in Tibet that aims to promote Tibetan culture, language, and solidarity.

But does all this social media activity change anyone’s mind? Does all the social media activity help Beijing’s politicians to think again, and does it tell the rest of us anything democratically useful?
