JACKSON — A teenager was seriously injured when he fell off the top of an SUV doing donuts in the woods and then was run over by the vehicle, authorities said on Saturday.

The incident occurred shortly after 11:30 p.m. on Friday when the victim and at least two others were in the woods off West Veterans Highway near the Church of Saint Monica, said Jackson Detective Capt. Steven Laskiewicz.

Laskiewicz said a 16-year-old Jackson resident, whose name was withheld by police, climbed on top of a 2000 Chevrolet Blazer being driven by Ronald Adams Jr., 20, of Jackson. He said Adams was doing donuts in the woods and the teen was thrown from the top of the vehicle before being run over.

Police were called at 11:36 p.m. to respond the parking lot of the church where the teen was taken after the accident, Laskiewicz said.

As Officer Edward Travisano pulled up to the church, several vehicles sped off, Laskiewicz said. He said Travisano managed to stop the Blazer, which at that point was being driven by another 16-year-old, who appeared to be under the influence of alcohol.

At the scene, officers Shannon Foote and Anthony Riso found Adams, who also appeared to be under the influence of alcohol, and the badly injured and intoxicated teen, Laskiewicz said.

The home towns of the teens were not immediately available.

The injured teen was taken to the Switlik Elementary School on West Veterans Highway where a landing zone was set up for him to be airlifted to Jersey Shore Regional Medical Center in Neptune, Laskiewicz said.

He suffered several broken ribs and other internal injuries, Laskiewicz said.

Adams was charged with assault by auto, underage consumption of alcohol, underage driving while intoxicated, possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia and multiple motor vehicle offenses, the police captain said.

He was being held in the Ocean County Jail in Toms River on $50,000 bail.

The 16-year-old male stopped in the Blazer was issued motor vehicle summonses for driving while intoxicated, reckless driving, careless driving and other motor vehicle offenses. A juvenile complaint was also prepared charging him with underage consumption of alcohol, Laskiewicz said. The teen was later released to a family member.

Police impounded the Blazer as well as a 1990 Dodge Ram pickup truck that was left at the scene, Laskiewicz said.

The investigation is ongoing and anyone with information about the incident is asked to call Officer Joseph Candido in the traffic safety unit at 732-928-1111.
