It’s that time of year – football is just starting back up and there are sure to be tailgate parties all around. Tailgate parties are a great way to celebrate and get ready to root on your favorite team, but they can be complicated if you have to follow a gluten-free diet.
Typical tailgate fare consists of burgers, hot dog, brats, chili, dips and desserts, most of which are not gluten-free as they are made. This is where creativity comes in. If you are invited to a tailgate party, offer to bring a dish to share that is gluten-free. Chili would be a great choice as it can easily be made gluten-free and served as a main dish served alongside tortilla chips. Bring a plate of cookies to make sure you have dessert and you are all set.
If you are hosting the tailgate, there are plenty of ways to make all dishes gluten-free with little trouble and with no complaints from your guests. Instead of serving burgers or hot dogs, which require gluten-free buns, focus on ribs, grilled chicken, chili (nachos) and dips (Buffalo Chicken Dip) for simplicity. Kebobs are a great way to pair meat and veggies and no one will miss the buns!
If beer is a must-have tailgate beverage, there are plenty of wonderful gluten-free beer options. To keep costs down, ask guests to BYOB so they can bring what they like. Homemade sangria, lemonade or iced tea are also great, naturally gluten-free options.
