Aldeburgh in Suffolk: famous for it’s award winning fish and chips, classical music and, er, that time Taylor Swift rocked up and shut the sleepy coastal town down for an entire weekend.
‘There’s lots of tourists about but we don’t get people as famous as her,’ David, an Aldeburgh resident, tells Now. ‘The young people knew her but most of us were clueless. We know Tom and that’s it.’
Yes, if you were wondering why Taylor flew 4,183 miles from Nashville to Aldeburgh (via a petrol station on the A12 in Colchester for a coffee stop) it’s because it’s home to Tay’s boyfriend Tom Hiddleston’s mum, Diana.
And a visit to them was only fair, seeing as less than 48 hours before Tom had met Taylor’s parents Scott and Andrea. To think they’ve only been dating for three weeks…
Lockdown
When an A-lister turns up unannounced, you’d expect pandemonium. But when you’re Taylor, 24, you don’t travel alone. The Shake It Off singer arrived with three security guards in tow, who followed Taylor and Tom everywhere.

Even when the couple, along with Diana, an arts consultant, and other members of Tom’s family took a stroll on the beach on 25 June – they trailed closely behind. Not only this, Taylor and Tom, 35, even got a hand from the local police, who were on hand to give the couple an escort. Nice to know where our taxes go, eh?
‘There were at least eight photographers running around after them both,’ another resident tells Now. ‘We spotted Taylor and Tom with the police before they drove off with Taylor’s bodyguards following behind in a Range Rover. It was really hectic but Taylor looked like she was really friendly and stopped to chat with people she saw.’
Home for tea
As well as taking in the sights and sounds of Aldeburgh (Now spotted the family strolling along the high street) Taylor was made to feel <very> at home in Diana’s house.

Her next door neighbour tells Now: ‘She was a very polite young lady with very blonde hair. She was very smiley, the whole family were grinning.’ And it wasn’t long before Taylor was smiling either, because Diana cooked a dinner any prospective mother-in-law would be proud of.
‘I cut a fillet steak for Taylor,’ local butcher Alfie tells us. ‘Tom’s mum came into our shop and ordered three fillet steaks and said they were for Tom and Taylor. I said “Taylor Swift?” and she said yes. I made sure I gave Taylor a meaty portion when I found out it was for her.’
Following their cosy family dinner on 26 June, Tom and Taylor hopped back onto their private jet and headed for Italy, bodyguards in tow, for some time away from their in-laws. But one thing is for sure, now all the locals know who Taylor is, they’re already very excited about her coming back.
‘The whole of Aldeburgh went mental,’ Alfie adds. ‘It was popping.’
