Movie star Jessica Alba is in some legal trouble for her “organic” baby formula sold under the label The Honest Co. that she started in 2011 with partners Brian Lee, Sean Kane, and Christopher Gavigan.
According to a lawsuit filed by the Organic Consumers Association, The Honest Co. has been using a number of chemical preservatives and fillers in their supposedly organic baby formula. Out of the 40 ingredients that make up the powder, 11 of them consist of artificial ingredients like sodium selenite, choline bitartrate, dl-alpha-tocopherol and phytonadione.
In the suit, the OCA claims that, ““Of the 40 ingredients…more than a quarter are synthetic substances that are not allowed in organic products…some…are federally regulated as hazardous compounds. At least one of these ingredients is irradiated…some have not been assessed as safe for human foods, much less for infant formulas.”
Although this suit is just now being announced, it follows right on the heels of other controversies about products sold under the Honest Co. product banner.
In 2015, a sunblock sold by the company had to be recalled, reformulated, and repackaged because consumers were complaining of skin burns/irritations caused by its abnormally high zinc-oxide levels. Shortly after this hiccup, in March of 2016, the brand’s liquid laundry detergent was accused by consumer watchdog groups of containing sodium lauryl sulfate, or SLS, an artificial chemical that the company had previously said they “would never use for any reason. Period.”
In response to this claim, the Honest Co. released this statement on March 10th:
Earlier today, The Wall Street Journal published a disappointing article about our company that included many factual inaccuracies and misleading statements, especially regarding our laundry detergent. The Journal clearly had the goal of harming the reputation and good will that we are so proud to have built here at Honest and we wanted to set the record straight.
Despite providing the Journal with evidence to the contrary, the Journal has falsely claimed our laundry detergent contains Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS). At Honest, we use Sodium Coco Sulfate (SCS) in our detergent and multi-surface cleaner. In fact, the Journal never even tested for SCS.
While many name brand detergents use SLS to create suds, we have always chosen to use SCS at Honest. Independent studies have shown that SCS is less irritating and safer to use in products from skin care to cleaners. Safe and effective, just like we like it because we want nothing more than for you to feel good about using our products everyday.
Now, it’s unclear what will happen in regards to these newer accusations about the Honest Company’s laundry detergent and baby formula, but if they continue to have these types of troubles with their customers (who value the company’s promise to provide safe and organic products), Jessica Alba might have to go back to making movies.
