california just deemed rape a non-violent crime and we also passed a law that lets people who commit rape to be let out earlier and I feel distraught and destroyed.

What the actual fuck?

so prop 57, a horribly worded prop was just passed in california.

“Proposition 57 is a California ballot proposition on the November 8, 2016 ballot that would allow parole consideration for nonviolent felons; authorize sentence credits for rehabilitation, good behavior, and education; and provides juvenile court judges to decide whether a juvenile will be prosecuted as an adult.”

Ok sounds all good and amazing right? WRONG. Making a note here that the Democratic Party supported this prop, which would make sense except for the stuff that’s so ambiguous and ridiculous.

Prop. 57 allows violent, dangerous and adult career criminals to be released from prison early, including those convicted of:
Rape by intoxication
Rape of an unconscious person
Human trafficking involving sex act with minors
Drive-by shooting
Assault with a deadly weapon
Taking a hostage
Domestic violence involving trauma
Supplying a firearm to a gang member
Lewd acts upon a child
Hate crime causing physical injury
Failing to register as a sex offender
Arson causing great bodily injury
Felon obtaining a firearm
Discharging a firearm on school grounds
False imprisonment of an elder.

California only deems 23 crimes violent (murder, aggravated robbery etc.) The crimes listed above don’t fall under those 23 crimes. Hence, prop 57 allows early parole hearings etc for criminals who commit these crimes. I would like to say that I supported this prop until I read it fully, and part of what’s wrong with the prop has to do with what California deems as violent. The ambiguous definition of non violent allows props like this to get passed, and even plays a role in the trial and outcomes of cases like the Brock Turner case.

Good News??? Props need to be passed in state government before they can be law. Protest, lobby, make your voice heard! It got Aaron Persky to step down and might even get him impeached.

if you’re in california, don’t ignore this. it’s absolutely disgusting that we’re allowing rapists to continue to receive shorter and shorter sentences. Rape is violent, hate crime is violent, and domestic VIOLENCE is violent. don’t let this be okay
